END NEARS FOR BAKERSFIELD ....... M :. o J"o '" ai By Dennis Greene BAKERSFIELD, CALIF. Aug. 26, 1970 - After tonight's race, there is just one more Class A speedway event scheduled here this season, as the Southern California masters of the sliding machines make way for th"e annual County Fair and Rodeo. But if Wednesday night is indicative of the way Speedway racing is catching on in this area, it's a good bet that a second session of racing will be seen at this track before the end of the year; A good tum out of enthusiastic fans this week watched Jim Nicholson continue on his come-back streak, as the young high-flyer captured the Handicap' Main•. after starting on the twenty-yard line. After wins at all three Southern California Speedway tracks, Nicholson will undoubtedly be relegated to the 30 or 40 yard line in the very near future. i And Bakersfield fans also discovered a new king of match racing, when Mike Konle defeated Sonny Nutter. Konle also won the Scratch Consolation Event, and was second behind Jeff Sperry in the Handicap Consolation. Nutter, however, still managed to win top money for the evening, turningin a first in the Scrtach Main and a second place behind Nicholson in the Handicap. Everyone is getting on the Speedway Band Wagon now that the track is locally "Owned, including two Country-Western radio stations, who furnished mini bike riding disc jockeys, much to the delight of the crowd. The final race of the season next Wednesday night will pit some of the fmest riding talent in Southern California, against the likes of Jeff Sperry and other local lads.
