c ... 1 c .... - '" ~ ellolne Workshop· One nice thing about the early model 250 and 305 Honda twins was the fact that the ~ engines were basicly the same whether they ~ were mounted in a 'Dream' a 'Hawk' or a u 'Scrambler' frame. A problem that seemed to pop up occasionally was one of a slipping dutch, due to abuse or mis-adjustment; if it was bad, it had to be replaced. It was more of a problem on the Scrambler model than the others, I believe, because the machine had rather tall gearing for dirt riding, but the owner believed in the name Scrambler so he took it to the nearest motorcycle playground and if it started to bog down on the hills, he started slipping the clutch. Needless to say this resulted in a destroyed clutch and a trip to the dealer for replacement. It' is common knowledge among motorcycle riders that if you are going to replace the clutch, you might as well put in a Barnett clutch and not have to worry about it again. It is true that the concensus of opinion is that Barnett makes the best replacement clutches on the market, however, in the wrong hands, it too can be destroyed, so if you have this problem, change your gearing at the same time. Before Barnett had manufactured a clutch for the Hondas, one dodge when the clutch started slipping was to insert another steel plate into the clutch assembly and this would beef it up enough to get you by. Here is a step by step clutch strip in case you want to save the cost of the job at your local dealer. The cost is not so much anymore as the time the machine is tied up in the repair shop with the shortage of mechanics that the motorcycle industry seems to be confronted with nowadays. By Rod Breaker z The first step is to drain the oil completely which is almost impossible to do, so be prepared for some to come dripping out when the clutch cover is removed. Complete draining can be helped byafter it has stopped draining, the right leaning the machine over to this will get out a little more. As the Scrambler is the more popular of the models, we have used one for our photos, the four bolts holding the footpeg bar·side stand must be removed and the bar taken away. This is true on the other models ahhough removal is different, the idea is to remove anything that will obstruct removal of the clutch cover on the left·hand sige of the engine. With a 10mm wrench, remove the I:iolt holding the shift lever on and remove the shift lever.
