WACO, TEXAS, Aug. 22, 1970- Indoor
short track racIng returned to the Heart
0' Texas Collseum today, and It was even
bigger than before with more than BO
entrIes from the far rearches of the state
on hand to compete for top State honors
In Sportsman short track.
One of the hottest entrIes was In the
lOOcc Class on a Yamaha, lIttle Danny
Forke (pronounced 4-key) from San
Antonio. Danny Is twice National Sportsman ChampIon In Short Track, and on the
concrete track he showed the form and
style that he consistently used to beat the
most experIenced short track racers In
the state.
He won every event he entered, the
100cc FInal and the LIttle Motor Grand
Final In whIch he put down all comers in
the under 200cc Class on the same lOOcc
Yamaha.
Present, also, was veteran Texas
racIng star Larry Beall, now 36, but still
able to show the youth corps a thIng or
two. The flrst turn of the 200cc heat was
. a blt congested and someone nosed the
rear of Larry's Honda out from under
him. Beall was tack up In a flash, but on
the lIB-mUe track he had lost a lap, and
the only way for him to get back Into the
running was to set someone else back a
lap, and guess who he chose? As Beall
charged Into the rear of the pack someone
went down hard, over the hIgh sIde, and
there was never another mention r4 the
matter.
The "MIster Hard Knocks of 1970"
A ward goes to Ronnie Hutchens of Fort
Worth. In the first turn of his 250cc heat
he mIxed it with Jimmy Phillips and went
over the right side. The race was restarted, and again Hutchens and Ph1ll1ps
tangled, and again Hutchens went over•
Once again the race was restarted, and
this time Hutchens got through the first
turn safely, but on the second turn he took
Ph1ll1ps out of the race with him. There
Is somethIng to be said about over eagerness.

second time in as many starts on the first turn and (below) in the second restart, he
waited until the second turn of the first lap before again spilling his Bultaco.
