South Visits :...... Placerville ..'" M N o rt5 By Bruce C. Young FreDlont Runs Reverse PrograIn By Bill Spencer FREMONT, CALIF_, Aug. 30, 1970 A reverse program started off the main events at Fremont this Sunady. As usual the 650 Expert class was an exciting, position-swapping race. Phil Ray led the pack into the first corner, only to be immediately passed by Fremont's Duane Spence. Ray slid out wide which almost seemed to leave the race to Spence, but with Phil out of second, Chal Delecco quickly replaced him. Bill Landsborough, who had been running fourth, took advantage of the si tuation and passed both Delecco and Spence. Hardly a full lap went by before Spence took over front position again and De1ecco moved up close enough to battle Landsborough' for runnerup. Two laps later he passed him. ,Meanwhile, complete confusion went on in the back of the pack. Wheeler Gresham and Craig Fillmer, who had been running fifth and sixth, slid out in the first corner - moving Bill Bourgeios and Bill Budde both up two positions. In the eighth lap Delecco pulled out making it Spence first, Landsborough second, Ray third, Bourgeios fourth and Budde fifth. That's how the checkered flag found them. The 650 Amateur wasn't quite as exciting - but it still meant points and a first place trophy for Brian Long. He led the race from start to finish, while Mario Rinaldi moved into second trophy position on the fourth lap. Ray Meade jetted off the line in the 650 Novices, followed by John Hernandez. Hernandez went wide in the flfst corner just one time letting Meade stretch the lead till the checkered flag. John Taylor topped 21 fellow 500 Amateur riders on, his fast-moving : JOHN SMITH "" 1r "" "" : MOTORCYCLE PARTS « 1r 1r 1r 1r « « « « « « "" GOOOIES 'N' STUFF « JAWA-eZ OEALER, 5 YEARS « YOU CALL - WE SHIP « MAl L ORDER « 2512 Franklin (916) 452-2622 .. * * * Sacramento, Calif. 95818 *,.. * * GORDY WILLIAMS Authorize d er TmUNP. Dennis Spence sneaked in on the fourth lap for third and was trailed by Mark Jensen. Honda mounted Don Wells won the 350 Amateur with Eric Bengtson riding his Harley to a very, very close second. It was his first Amateur win. Racing just seems to be getting better and closer all the time in the 250 Expert. With all the newly turned Experts improving with each race, it can never predict who's going to come out on top. John Gennai came out tops in the first comer action ·followed by John H1ebo, Barry Brown, Bill Landsborough and Mike Renslow. By the end of lap one, Renslow had zapped Landsborough and Brown. Then by the end of the next lap, Renslow had moved into second and started to close the gap on Gennai. Both riders pulled away from the pack while H1ebo held third and new Expert Barry Brown kept up a steady pacc in fourth place, just ahead of another new Expert, Rick Hocking. By checkered flag time Gennai finished only about half-a-bike-length ahead of Renslow, H1ebo third, Brown had dropped back to sixth, with Hocking taking over fourth and Larry Powers fifth. Bruce Brown rode a beautiful race in the 250 Amateur. He got a great start, led the pack into the flfst corner and then pulled away a little more each lap. Craig Nicho~ bad worked hard for second, by battling with hard charging Don Ivan who. ended up third, Steve Hernandez fourth and Pat McCanel fifth. Yamaha mounted Gary Leopold beat out the Bultacos of Greg Thorton, Bruce Farley and John Dixon to win the 250 Amateur. Sonny Kenyon sponsored riders Pat Brown and Danny Cosio were at each other's throat in all 6 laps of the 200 Amateur. Cosio led it from lap one to' lap four with Brown on his wheel the whole time. In the last corner of lap four, Brown slipped underneath and led it till the checkered flag, but not without being nudged by Danny at least 3 times a lap. Kenny Eggers won still another 125 Novice Main. He just started riding about two months ago - but he's got quite a few first place trophies to his name. Carl Blackledge rode his Yamaha to second place. The 200 Novice race was led from start to finish by Gary Tonda. Mike Kenyon came from fifth place to take over second, followed by Charlie Wheeler. The most excitement came at the end of the day when 200 Novice Mike Kenyon was protested for illegal equipment by fellow rider Larry Alexander. When all was said and done and two motors had been torn down _ Larry went home $20 poorer and Mike $20 richer (with a trophy to boot).
