/ HONORS SHAW, By Mike Capallte Pbotos by Dennis Greene SAN GABRIEL, CALIF. Aug. 23, 1970Sunday's scratcb and handicap main events looked like a rerun from Friday night at Orange cOunty as Larry Shaw took the scratcb and Ruben Benites won the Handicap. \ The third division main event comprised three riders and off the Une it was Scott Sivadge taking over the lead and cbolding it all the way with Ricb Richards running in second. In the third lap Richards went down and Dennis Cunningham moved into second and althougb Richards remounted and tried to catcb uP, the finlsb was Sivadge, Cunningham and Richards. From his showing Sunday In the second division main event, it appear s Billy Greg has had his last tour of dUty In this division' at this track. As·the gate went up, Bill'S clutch cable broke, which is alright because once under way, it isn't used again. The oniy problem was that Bill didn't have his RPM's uP for the start and he got off the Une last. Dan Willits took the lead out of the first corner as Lonnie Arnold, back after a long layoff, was moving rapidly Into third place and Grey had charged into fourth right behind him As Arnold moved under the first and second place mand to take the lead, Billy went right along with him Into second spot. Stet down and dragging the ground, Billy took the lead away from Aronld and took the win going away.Arnoldf1n1sbedinsecond while third went to Robert Sands with Dan Torsten Hallman Racing, Inc. Gresham took the inside and Shaw had to push hard to get the lead and althougb Gresham gave it all he had. Larry kept the lead from the first turn. The Handicap Main Event ~ a real slam-bang race with alHheridersglv1ng it everything they had for one of the best sbows of the day. Benites, using his 0yard handicap to its full advantage, grabbed the lead with Chuck Tidwell and Larry Shaw dropped in behind him. As Cody took to the outside to get around Haserot for fourth Shaw moved under Tidwell Into second. COC\Y then passed Tidwell. Konle, who started s1xtb, took fourth trom Tidwell and the race evened out as Benites was holding the line through the corners in good shape and to the checkered flag. Shaw was secondand Konle followed him across the Une. The Scratch Main was another chance for Shaw to show his jackrabbit start whicb won his heat and semi for him. Thsi Urne Cody took the inside Into the first corner and Shaw went the long way around and grabbed the lead comllng out by getting a good charge out of the corner as Cody dropped into second. Mike Bast was In third when Konle went into the corner a little too hard and the machine spun out and it high-sidded him off onto the track. By this Ume, Shaw was building uP his lead and despite berculean efforts by Konle's teammate Cody, Shaw held to win, Coc\yfln1shed second, and Bast third. The crowd bas grown quite a bit since last week and if it keeps uP, the promoter Jobriny Gibson will need some more grandstands before long. This track is fast catching uP the fans interest as it shows off the riders ability.
