Expert winner, Aldana, goes through technical inspection.
Heat race winners, Ken Pressgrove
and Dick Mann got the jump on the field
followed by Manness, Rice and Aldana.
Keith Mashburn on a very rapid Shell
Thuett-tuned Yamaha 650 was sixth followed by Rayborn anddefend1ngChampion Markel. Mann was pacing Pressgrove
like a cat on a mouse while Rice dogged
Mann in the same manner.
Right behind Rice, just waiting for the
appropriate moment, lurked Aldana.
Rice and Aldana passed the leaders on
lap five and Manness faded back. It was
the three teammates, Rice, Aldana, and
Pressgrove leading the field like an ad
for BSA.
.
As the remaining laps dwindled, Aldana made his move. He is a hard
charging competitor who races bikes
for the money as well as the fun of it.
Earlier in his heat, he had passed Dave
Sehl with so little space to spare that
Aldana snapped the carburetor offSehl's
Harley. Motorcycle racing is a game of
risks, and little David risks his own neck
more than anyone else.
. After a close duel with Rice, David
passed him neatly, decisively and in a
polite manner and went to gather uP the
rewards of his incredible sld11 and talent.
The rewards included national points to
put him very close to the 300 point
barrier, a thousand dollars, and an
enormous trophy from the promoters
Betzel Smith and Gil Dosmagen.
The second place fin1sh by Rice was
almost enough for him to regain the National Points lead, but a fifthplacefin1sh
by Dick Mann prevented it. Rice, with
378 points, trails the leader Mann, by a
slim two point margin.

Mert Lawwill pushes his H-D hard in time trials. In heat, however, his engine
died on him while battling with Dick Mann and he failed to reach the finals
or semis.
Jim Rice rallied to a second place finish and the points he collected brought
him to within two points of National Points leader Dick Mann (380) •
