Jody Nicholas tried the Harold Allison Norton for only the second time this year and walked out of Ascot on Friday Night with all the marbles. Jody has been trying for the big one on an off and on basis, mostly off, insce 1962, anditflnallycame up Jackpot. The Allison Nortons have made It into the wtnn'er's circle three times this year with three different riders. There has never been any question as to the horsepower of the big 750 twins and if riders can be found to ride them the job gets done. Nicholas came from third place to win his heat race, sling- shoting from the back to pass both Eddie Mulder and Shorty Seabourne. A third spot in the time trials put him in the Trophy Dash for the first time ever where he out throWed Tom Rockwood for the second surprise of the night. Spills in the early portion of the show took out amateur Bob Fulton, Reg Chosney and Len Earl. Fulton fell in the first turn of the first lap of practice and came UP with a shoulder injury. Tom looked like the rider to beat unW Seabourne agatn got Into one of his famous wing-dings which shot him straIght up in the air going on the backstretch. Rockwood was .caught on the outside, between Shorty and the wall and while Shorty was doing his thing Nicholas scooted by on the inside to take the lead. The next ten laps found Rockwood dicing back and forth with Shorty and Lloyd before he finally broke awayagatn to challenge Nicholas tor the win. The laps ran out and it was the former road racing champ in for the win and a sweep of the three times out on the trackfor the night. Houchins dropped out before the end of the race, not from Seabroune - fright but with mechanical troubles. Seabourne, who had landed back on the machine on both his head and other parts of the body, got back in for third place over Dewayne Keeter. Once agatn both Kenny Roberts and Gary Scott were back at Ascot on the smae night but once agatn engine troubles broke IlP a promised duel. Roberts dropped out of his heat race with a dead engine and Scott won his heat race with ease. The engine troubles for Roberts ended another win streak at nine straightw1ns.
