Story and Photos by Dennis Greene BAKERSFIELD, CALIF., Aug. 15, 1970 - After a one week layoff to give the new promoters a chance to get set up, the 'Speedway' racing returned to the Fairgrounds. Rod Atchison and Bob Fran£esco of the Midas Muffler Shops in the Bakersfield area are the new promoters and are sanctioned by the Speedway Racing Association. Now that the show is owned and run by local residents, support and interest should be keener and grow even more. With ads on T,V. and radio the local residents will get the word that motorcycle racing is one of the best sports to take the family to see. Jim Nicholson, return to speedway after a two years layoff becuase of an injury that was rumored to be so serious that he would never walk again let alone ride again, displayed grim determination as he made a comeback Wednesday night in a second division event and won it with little or no trouble. He is looking forward to moving up to the first division and running for the big money. Sonny Nutter was the man of the hour when in a special match race he beat Rick Woods the King of the Hill'. Rick was unbeaten all season in match events until Sonny got to him. This loss did not slow Rick down at all. In the Main Event he took lust, Sonny ran second with Bakersfield's own Mike Keen third. The Scratch Main Event also went to Woods, who will have things just a little more his own way for a few weeks now that Steve Bast is overseas, but Steve left the family name in good hands with his younger brother Mike. Mike is making Rick Woods work harder, much harder than Rick would like to for lust place. For those of you who think that Bakersfield is just too far to go for a race in the middle of the week, you couldn't be more mistaken. With the new freeway all the way the trip takes less than an hour and it is a good chance to get out of the city smog into the dry desert heat. (Results on page 22) Hodakl IIont...
