SCOTT TOPS OCS FIELD Story & Photos by Rich Roffman ORANGE COUNTY SPEEDWAY' Aug. 12, 1970 - A near capacity crowd enjoyed some of the best racing of the year, as a record 228 riders competed in both T.T. & Short Track at O.C.S.' regular A.C.A. sanctioned Wednesday evening races. Starting the night off at O.C.S. was the 125cc Jr. TT and quite a start it was with over 50 entries which required four heats and two semis to produce the 16-rider main. Scott Smith (Yam) was the 125cc Jr.. T.T. winner and in a big way, as he easily won over second place Steve Flowers, also Yamaha mounted. Third went to Marty Davis (Bul). Smith continued his winning streak with another first for the K&N Racing Team in the 250cc Jr. T.T. As in the previous race, Scott literally ran away from the rest of the riders for his second win of the evening. "Mr. Consistency", Steve Thomas (BSA), rode a perfect race from start to finish in the 500cc Jr. T.T. The Senior division was super rough Wednesday evening with riders like Gary Scott, Steve Nichols, Gary Wells, AI Baker, Scott Autrey, John Isaacs and Stan Rogers, just to name a few, really battling it out for that fIrst position. Scott wasted little time as he started the night off with his first win in the 125cc Sr. T.T. Right behind Scott was Wells who pressured Scott all the way. Gary Jones beat out San Diego's top rider, Ray Vanderpool, for third. The 250cc Sr. T.T. was all Gary Scott's as he walked away with his second win of the evening. Second went to Mike Myers. Scott's third win of the evening came in the 500 Sr. T.T. Tragedy struck in the 250cc Sr. S.T. Semi as Randy Riggs, O.C.S. Gary Scott (3) and Steve Nichols (12) grab inside lane at start of 125cc Sr. TT. Gary Wells (17) jumps to lead but finish second to Scott. • 250cc Sr. T.T. point leader, fell while leading the S.T. event and was hit by several bikes. Although Randy has a badly broken leg he managed a peace sign as he was loaded into the ambulance for the ride to the hospital. The 500cc Sr. S.T. heat saw Stan Rogers lead Scott for all but the last few feet, as Gary got a perfect drive off the last corner to take the win by inches. . The 125cc Sr. S.T. Main started out to be the race of the night with Scott, Wells, Autrey, and Nichols changing positions in each lap. On .\ Scott Smith powers his way to 1250c Jr. TT win. He aiso won the 250cc Jr. TT. Gary Wells (17) took second in the 125ccSr. T.T. Unbreakable Front fender with Bracket fits all (1's Another product from TIS MOTORS 1049 W.
