N1CKELSON TAKES CARLSBAD TRIALS '" = to:! :<: By Craig Hunter Pbotos by Red Ricbardson SADDLEBACK PARK, CALIF., Aug. 16, 1970- Today the San Diego Trials Riders :... hosted their second trials at Carlsbad U Raceway, and , since they were able to use the entire raceway grounds, presented an interest1ng event to nearly 100 riders. The terrain at Carlsbad has been used for motocross and scrambles for about two years now and as a result, all but the extra rough ground has been pretty well to:! d 81 II Robertson takes some of the soft stuff. t • uP. torn Due to the 1nflux of new riders, the amateur sections were conf1ned to the easier ground, with the emphasis on bastcs wh1le the experts and masters were left to contend with the more d1fflcult areas. Bob (Nick) Nickelson led the Masters borne with a score of 98 to the 107 of Ossa-Mounted Kevin Walker,. Old Chief Johnny White Hair (John Walters) cruncbed b1s Bultaco into thtrd with 117. Dewayne Blazer and Mark Egger went at it hammer and tong in the expert class with Dwayne edging Mark out 124 to 126. Fernando Belalr was thtrd with 133. Tb1rteen year old Mark M1r1anl put it to the Amateur LJghtwe1ghts, losing only 14 marks to the 21 of Terry Grlffth. Dick Cochran and Bruce Lamphar ended UP with a tie score of 25 to sbare the Ultra L1gI1tweight victory. Messrs. Cochran and M1r1anl picked UP enought points for transfer and so next time they have to play with the Experts. I'm sure they'll make themselves known fairly soon. The amateur riders were generally pleased with their sections; there was notblng ba1ry enough to discourage the new riders and yet the old bands bad enough difficulty to be kept bonest.· Th1ngs weren't so rosy for the MasterExperts. They didn't get to be Masters by being timid, but over the last few trials their sections have been getting much tougher and. in some instances. dangerous. You might wonder that a sport that is as slow as trials could be termed dangerous. However, fa11lng off a n1ne foot rock wall into a p11e of boulders could sort of spoil your day, no matter what your speed. BW White bad the mtsfortuneoftak1ng such a fall. He 'iWS lucky to get out with a broken finger; it could have been a lot worse. Some of the riders also were con c ern e d over section ntne, which skirted another boulder studded bole. It' s not very cool, having to dab down a cOO. We bope that, in the future the unneccessary danger can be avoided. There are plenty of rocks and logs laying around that don't have cOOs next to them. in spite of the foregoing sermon, most of us bad a good time. We bope to see you at the Nationals, September 13, at Saddlebllck Park.
