Crews Spills--But Wins Anyway Story and Photos by James W. Shipley EUREKA, CALIF., Aug. 8, 1970 . Redwood Acres Raceway, billed as the fastest track in Northern California, ~as packed Saturday night for second of a four race series put on by the Farwest Motorcycle Club here in Eureka. Although the expected riders from Shouthern California didn't show, around 100 were on hand from the local area and Oregon. The trac\( was in the .best shape ever, except the, first switchback which was watered down too much and didn't dry out all night long. Even though ~ lot of bikes went down on this wet spot, the only serious accident took place in the pits. One of the areas top mechanics, Slim Joclin, went over backwards and got a badly cut leg while checking out the clutch he had just repaired .on Mike Benson's Triumph. , The 100cc Notice main was one real tight race between Loran Sorenson and John Snight, with Kawasaki mounted Sorenson taking his first win in his first season. Brack Zollo also in his first season was doing well till he caught his foot and was ou t of the race with a badly twisted leg. Five of the seven racing Richter brothers were present for the race with Pat coming in first in the 125cc Novice eVent follwed by Dana Bray Mike Thrash retained control and won COLISEUM CYCLE RATES S7S PER YEAR .SO ISSUES MAIL OROER I ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• iN STOCKTON l * PENTON - CZ HUSQVARNA Coleman's. 1545 E. Marion Matlock and Dennis Miller, both of Oregon, were here to take on Harvey Crews in the Open Expert. Harvey really showed why he's tops in this event when he took a spill and after being passed by the pack got up and . made his way back up there to win. He was folioed in by Matlock then Miller. There was a weekly contest the purse for which started at five dollars and through contributions from the specators got up to $130.01 before 14·year·old Larry Fryar claimed it. This is Larry's first season and pretty happy with his prize after taking a disappointing sixth place in his Main. "True Grit" -John Smith (2601) Stormy Winters was back again to try to break the gastest lap time set by Harvey Crews in the fIrSt races here, but he didn't quite make it. He and Gary Thompson left Monday after this race for the East where they plan to follow the Nationals for the rest of the year. The next Redwood Acres race will be by J Noffsinger cmco, CALIF. August 8, 1970 - Lowell a night race held Saturday August 22 Moura! and Rollen' Eskew, put away and the Northwest Championship , double wins here Saturday night, both Sunday Se:eternber 27. winning the Handicap and Scratch . (Results on page 22) mains in their respective classes. Moural rode his Yamaha in his usual style, ;with slides beginning at the halfway mark down the straights and 'hadcrowd on its feet during the 250cc scratch main. He grabbed the lead from the start but had Ron Long's Bultaco to contend with. Both boys went into the corners full bore, with Long trying to edge between Moural and the inside of the track. On the last corner Ron made a supreme effort to take the lead, however Lowell shut the door at the end of his slide and came forth the winner. Eskew was hounded constantly by a fellow rider from Rancho Cordova, Paul Carter in both the 100cc Handicap and Scratch events. Th~y rode both races in . the - same fm'ish order with Eskew pulling out wins by one wheel length in both events. Carter would pull up even on the straights, and stay even in the corners, but Eskew always had the inside, and was first out of each corner and first to the finish. John Grant had a spirited battle with both Ron Alves and Ted Bare, in the 200cc Scratch main. Gerald Berquist (4f) decided to take the wet turn a bit too fast and it resultHowever, Grant was- not to be denied, ed in him forcing to drop his bike. Gordon Kunhle (11), Mike Thompson (18f) and took first on his Kawasaki. Alves and Gary Thompson (17f) take evasive action. and Bare finished in a dead tie for second, one bike length behind the winner. (Results on page 22) Mike Thrash usually one of the first out of the pack but falls down alot stayed on it this .time to take a first in the 250cc Novice with a nice lead over the usual winners in this event Mike Benson and Jay Stradley, winner of the trophy liash. Disqualified after missing the jump in the next to the last lap was BSA mounted David Cherry. This would have been his first win in the last five races, but fu-st fell to John Fry who had nade' his move to get around second place Mike Shook toward the end of the race. Fry, who lost out in Willow Creek when his coil fell off, took no chances this time he had it taped on so well it was beyond recognition. Harvey Crews wasn't able to enter the 250cc expert this time as the rings he ordered to replace the set he t;.lew at Willow Creek arrived in small pieces. As the race got underway, though, Gordon Kuknle, who was in second, went wide to miss Gerald Berquist who appeared to be going down on that wet switchback. Gerald managed to pull his bike back up but Kuknle went down and didn't get back in the race till he'd been passed by the whole field which was being led by Mike and Gary Thompson and Rick Berquist. Gary led most of the race with Mike TOM'S CYCLE CENTER - BSA, K.awa· ukl, SUZUki, GrHVU, M'ontlSJ, DSSl, Moto·.ta. Full Ii,. of Mont.sa parts.
