MIKE BAST GRABS COSTA MESA -VICTORY By Mike COSTA MESA, CALIF., August 7,1970Spectacular spills seemed to be the order of the day at the Orange County Fairgrounds as the oldtimers as well as the new riders were having their share of problems. Last week's rash of spills could definitely be blamed on the new surface placed on the track which made for a deep cushion which was hard for the riders to adaPt to. This week, the only excuse was not being used to the new surface as the track was in good shape, but the riders were still falling like flies as no less than tWenty-three riders 'bit the dust'in the course of the evening, with some riders having repeat performances. A sad note was injected into the evning's entertainment as it was announced over the loudspeaker system that this would be Steve Bast's last ride of the year. Much to the disappointment of his growing number of fans, they were informed that the following Tuesday (A ugust 11) he would ,be leaving for England to race the remainder of the year over there as a regular member of one of the teams In the British Speedway League. Two weeks ago he won the second division main event, last week the consolation and this week the 'handicap main event. It looks like his' cherry-picking days are over, but whatever the handicap, Ron will be In there trying his best. Working hard the whole evening to bring glory home to Pete Palmer's Great Bear Racing Team was Larry Heinse1man who was doing everything right this evening and worked his way up from the back of the pack to second spot which was quite an accomplishment. What'really made Larry the Hero in the eyes of his team was the match race earlier in the program where Larry was pitted against Mike Konle of the Valvollne-Sponsored USA racing Team. He JumPed into the lead off the line' and Konle was never able to catch him as Heinselman crossed the .line a double winner, not only winning the race, but with the rivalry going between the teams, the beating of a member of another team probably made him feel better than just . beating another rider. The Second division Main Event looked more like a third division heat as only tWo riders crossed the line at the finish as the test had fallen down, some even had the bad luck to get up and continue in the race and then fall again. The win went to Ruben Benites who took the lead at the start and held it all the way, moving up to cop a second spot .and doing some excellent handling trying to avoid fallen riders was Bruce Flanders. The third division MaIn Event had a spectacular crash. Jeff Jahns lost control in the pit corner and slammed into the break-away fence which moved it back a couple feet. Jeff still had a problem of not being able to turn off the throttle and as he was still upright, the machine got a bite and took him right through the hole and intQ,. the pits. The win in the third division went to John Genna! who led it from wire to wire. with Brian Crawford working his way up 1R1AIIIIIN8 CLOSED TO MOTORCYCLES TRESPASSERS WILL BE PROSECUTED Legislation has been passed to close Southern California land to motorcycles. ., flflike Bast leads the crew in front of the weekly capacity crowd. for a second place with Irwin Moon copping third. As the Scratch Main lined up, the Steve Bast fans were hoping he could win this one so he could go to England with his last race being a winner. but they weren't reckoning with his brother Mike.. Mike grabbed the lead Into the first corner with Steve closed in for second with Larry Shaw right behind him and Terry Graham in foUrth. Ste:ve was pushing hard, but Mike was determined and Steve was trying just a little too hard as he drifted wide in the corner and Shaw moved inside of him. Now that he was in second, Shaw was working harder, he wanted this win bad and he started pushing Mike Bast for the lead. Mike had this one and he wasn't about to relinquish it as he kept the lead all the way with Shaw second and Steve Bast having to settle for third with Graham fourth.
