.... "" COSTA MESA, CALIF. July 24, 1970-It anyone was wondering how the Bast brothers were recovering from the accidents that put them out of competition for the first of the season, all they had to do was be at the Orange County Fairgrounds speedway track Friday night. These two brothers split the wins between them In the main events with Ron Taylor doing the honors on the second division main. Third division winner was Paul Henderson. In the Handicap Heats, not one of the top riders with the 60-yard handicaps was able to overcome this handicap and take a win, this does lead one to believe maybe these large handfcaps should be re-evaluated. Mike Bast was aced out In the handicap as he was unable to get a transfer position as was local favorite RlckWoods.ln the semi, Steve Bast was able to again transfer to the main as the other two 60-yard riders, Sonny Nutter and Bill Cody moved to the Consolation. In the main event, it was Don Cullum and Scott Autry In the lead as Steve moved under Mike Konle to 'move Into fifth spot. Suddenly, 'Scott Autrey was down In the corner and as all the machines swerved to mlssh1m, Konle wasn't quite lucky enough and cliPped the fallen machine and spilled himself. BIll Cody holds lead pver Scott Autrey (second) and Mike Bast (third). Steve had used this to his advantage to get through the traffic, he was now In second spot with Cullum quite a ways In front. Bast knew that he only had one lap to do it In and he poured on the gas and as they came out of the last corner for the checkered flag, the fans were on their feet as Steve powered under Don to take the win. The scratch heats gave the crowd two upsets as Autrey bested Cody and -Larry Shaw was able to take and keep the lead over Nutter. In the semi, Larry was the only one of the two to transfer to the maIn event. He won the semi also while Steve Bast topped the other semi with brother Mike finishing second. As he hit the throttle to come out of the corner, he couldn't seem to get a bit and Bast powered around the outside to move Into the lead the be held to the f1n1sh. After the scratch semi which went to Rick Woods with Sonny Nutter second, they rolled to the Une for the Scratch MaIn. Th.Is was figured to be a Steve Bast race all the way as he had already beaten each of the other riders at one time or another during the evening. He had beaten brother Mike In the scratch semi, and had taken Shaw In the handicap heat and Konle In the handicap maIn. It this race wa:s suPposed to be a cake walk for Steve Bast, somebody forgot to tell Mike as he jumped Into the lead In the first corner with Steve second. As it came to the flnal corner, it was ohv1ous that Steve was going to be right next to Mike coming out. As they accelerated for the corner, however, Mike pulled ahead and took the checkered flag and the win to keep Steve from winning both main events for the evening. Due to the growing crowds, due In part to the showing at the county fair which Introduced speedway racing to a multitude of people who had never seen It before, 'the promoter has announced that he will Instal! an additional 500 seat to help handle the overflow crowds. The second division maIn was apretty hotly contested race as B1l1 Silverthorn and Klaus Nleison were duklng It out for the lead when out of nowhere came Ron Taylor who came uP and took over the lead and held It to the checkered flag. Moving uP to third spot In the melee was Chuck Tidwell with J1m Ashworth copping fourth. The division three main was spiced with sp1lls as Paul Henderson and Robille Wells were the only two riders who didn't fall down as they' crossed the line for first and second. The spec1al match race pitted Steve Bast against Sonny Nutter and It was a toss-uP as far as crowds choice was concerned as Sonny won the toss and took Hodalla Mont.sa Gr.... s Motorcycles West,,;ilster Sport C,de Guy R.
