FREMONT, CA., July 19, 1970 - It's going to be a long, hot summer batUe for number one, and thebatUe15 between Jim Foley and John Green. Green came to Hayward Saturday nigbt and stayed over for Fremont Sunday w1nn1ng a race here. His win at Fremont was in the extremely fast 250 Expert Main. But wait a minute race fans, let me start at the beg1nn1ng. The Palo Alto M.C. decided to run a reverse program. That 15, 650Cc first, which is cool as they usually ride last and are tired and bitchy. But to add to the excitement they ran all Experts first and then Amateurs.' So olf we go with Dan Hughes running away with the lead in the early laps. T1ffen Mullenax was second and Jerry Chadim held up third for the distance. Jim Foley had it relatively easy in the 500 Main as Green worked his way to third through the field. He couldn't get Duane Spence though. This is all leading up to the 250 Expert Main. Foley and Green are now perched on their respective bikes, slighUy tired and hoping for a slight break. Sorry, no luck. Even with the inching over the line, it was bound to be a fast break and thats what happened. It's no fun being a starter and watching everybody cheat just a litUe. Guys like Foley don't. Some don't realize they are and others are quite blatant. At any rate, Starter Steinke threw it and Bruce TeIxeira was already on another flight. Green was second and then the whole world. Bruce held on for awh1le but Green had his eye on that first spot and was not be denied. Back in the pack M1ke Renslow and John Genna! were putting on a show ol their own. Teixeira held second with a bad hiP that he got in the heat. The overall result for the weekend was Green plus two over Foley. In tile Combined 350 and 500 Amateur Main, Larry Schultz closely followed by the 1,R.A.'s famous Ken Caldwell. This 15 noteworthy as Schultz is only famous for his talk and he now has a win to his credit. Steve Foster rode his stock Bultaco to a decisive win in the 250 Amateur and even though he st1ll resembles a motocrosser, he has def1n1tely got style. Dan Cosio had his revenge in the 200 Amateur after ba1l1ng in the heat. Pat Brown was there most ol the race but Boltalo Bob WUl1s was there for the checkered. Charlie Wheeler got with the program in the 200 Novice and won it wh1le young Mike Kenyon tried hard. Queens Spoil Triple 'M' Riders By Vi & Lucky Kirby Jim Odom, on his way to victory. By B1ll Spencer SANTA ROSA, CA., July 19, 1970- Jim Odom renewed his attack on the checkered flag tonight with a win at the Chris Beck Arena. The annual Sonoma County Fair drew over 40 riders and a good crowd ol spectators as a prelude to the 20-mUe National that w111 be held on the on-mUe track, July 26. The IS-lap Main saw last year's winner, Ralph Waldman, on the pole with Mark Brelsford next to him. Odom and Dave Hansen rounded ou the front row with Hansen coming from the outside to take first place. Dave couldn't hold it long though and Rapid Ralph was first after one lap with Odom close behind, Hansen, Al Kenyon, and Brelsford f1fth. Hansen's problem was mostly caused by a bad sp1ll in practice that left him with a wrenched knee. He st1ll managed to hold out for a third. - I Brelsford methodically picked his way through the pack to third only to wind up in the infield with a deceased motor. His rigid Spring wasn't the best suited for this short-short track and he had many problems with it. With Mark out, Jimmie put the pressure on Garbini as had been done to him in the semi and Odom led the last half. Kenyon, hungry for the elusive checkered put on a good chase for Hansen's spot with Jim Crenshaw doing the same on AI. Crenshaw, from Sacramento and Modesto's Stan Anderson were the only green platers to make the Main and .both did a very creditable job. in the lO-lap Consolation, M1ke 0' Brien got the best ol Dennis Huff in the closing laps for the win. Ph1l Ray held a tight third spot for most motorcycle racers' just get up and want to know if ,there is a restart. TonJght he was on a Husky and ridehedidlln the first lap he was sixth; by the next he was third, and by the fourth he was second. Da Prato really had to ride because this guy was hot on his trail, and a time or two it was a tossup as to who would cross first. As the checkered flag dropped, Da Prato crossed with Foreman second. Placing third was Larry Sharts on a Bultaco. The 250 Amateur showed a hairy race when Kenneth Hatch on a Husky jumped out for an early lead and Ed Brown on a Yamaha following closely behind. Hatch led the race up to the seventh lap, then as they went into the next, Brown passed and managed to cross the checkered flag. However, circumstances were reverse, Hatch was following closely behind Brown. As Brown pulled olf into the field, his bike got away from him and almost lost it. Fortunately, he manlpulated the bike beautifully and kept it under control. The audience cheered him on vigorously. The riders this year seem to be more prolessional. Their riding abilities and showmanship, and mainly sportsmanshiP, cannot be underestimated. The riders are all an outstanding group ol people and each could trophy. July 11, 1970Fun f1lled race nigbts aPe becoming 'par for the course' here at TriPle M. But tonight the fellows def1n1tely had a treat. Presenting the first trophY for the first event, 100cc Novice race was the "Queen ol Saskaboo County" ... unfortunately there 15 no such queen and no such . county. Donald Graham ol Yuba City dressed as a queen, and sure shook Norman Denny olAuburn who placed first in the division. Tonight the joke was on Denny. However, the candidate for a queen was real. She is Cathryn Denise Mason, age 17, of Yuba City. Cathy is a candidate for Miss Yuba-Sutter" and was escorted by Russ Greathouse also ol Yuba City, Cathy presented' the remainder ol the trophies. As usual the biggest event was the 250Cc Novice. Tonight this event consisted of 35 riders; three heats, and two semis, making the Main an l8-bike event. B1ll Da Prato jumped out on his Husky for the lead. Then there were several changes, too many to really keep up with, but one rider proved interesting, as it was his first tir"e out in the 250 Novice. His name, Lonnie Foreman from Yuba City. All year he has ridden in the 100cc Novice division, and always seem to miss TIlE HANDLE DOES TilE LIFTING 3 models available - use at home. ·hills. or shop - Heavy steel con- "IIAC E PIIOVEN" LAIOE $139.•' CONICAL 'I• •Y· & .IAKE stnlctioJl-Build yourseU plans $2.00 IIA • ••• y.
