Berquist Takes Overall At Weekly Desert Meet By Dick Wright HI VISTA, CALIF., July 19,1970- Every- one got lost on the many Hi Vista traiis, but desert pro Larry Bergquist (Bul) was able to find the right one and came in for the win. Gary Griffin took the 250cc class, also riding a Bultaco, and young Terry Clark made it three in a row in the 100cc class. The race was set uP as two 35-mlle loops in the very popular and much used Hi Vista area. With all the trails it is hard not to get lost out there, unless the course is marked with wall to wall lime. After the start, all the big bike riders charged to the climb with Don Ross in the lead on a Husky. Tom Poteet (Bul) took over the lead after five miles then everything began to haPpen. Halfway around the course the leaders lost the lime and everyone made big circles to pick it uP agaln. Poteet found it first and reached the pits in the lead with Rich Thorwaldson (Ric) close behind. These two dueled it out in the second looP until they got lost again. This time .T. . . INTO TH. WINN."·. CI"CL. TRIUMPB·BONDA·BSA RIDERS The Finest In Motorcycle ser,ice 2040 S. I Lanclste, (lOS) 942-9624 CHOWCHILLA, CALIF., July IS, 1970 The Chowchlllas Rodeo Grounds, once agaln came to life this night with the thrills and excitement of leather-clad riders and their mounts. The leathers were not chaps from the old West, the mounts were not the 'Iflld horses and sti:!ers normally found in this setting. The riders were riding horses, and through the genius of men, the horse-power was contained in steel, iron, and aluminum bodies, shod with various types of rubber "shoes" known as knobbies to those who follow this sport of cyc1lnJ. Ghosts of the past were no doubt aroused from the roar of the crowd. and the spirit of compettton, present here. tonight. The Madera Braves M?C? and their lovely "Sqa ws" are to be congratulated for their excellent slag1ng of tonight's events, every thing was well planned, and run off on schedule, the track crew, starters, flagmen, and checkers earned a "well done". A total of 134 riders from District 35 and 36 were here to compzte for glory and trophies, and from the very first heat, it was plain that It was going to be a night of great racing. After the heats and semi mains were run, to the enjoyment of the many spectators, and ride.rs1\l1ke, the 100cc Novices were. callect out to begin the dozen main events. This large grouP had the lead chaglng many times, and crashes were plentiful, cutting down the front runners of Greg Hansen, Kaw, John Graver, Kaw,followed by Ron Lessley and his Suzuld, followed for fourth position Dave -Neison (Hod). After the thinning out process, these four put on a real close battle. The 125 Novices were next uP and it was a Yamaha parade, and this large class found Rich Armitage, Mike Keith and Doyce Stogner victorious. The combined 125 Amateur and E>q>ert found Ron Tobey wtnnlng the main with room to spare on his "Shafter Yamaha." The quick Bultaco carried Bruce Baseman to second spot. after taking the heat in a great duel with . Tobey. Neil McDonald (Yam), made third. The 200 Novice winners were both riding Bultacos with Ronald Fuentes and JIm Roach putting on one of the better races of the night. The 250 Novices put on the hair raiser of the hight, this large field had a real Stampede going, and in the Rodeo Arena the action was well placed. Richard ,Garcia (Bul) and Stan Sanderson riding the "Maxwell Bultaco" for the first time, lost out by justabout the width of a· horses tall hair. Another Bultaco rider Richard Mabe.e was in there all the way for third. ·The 250 Amateurs contioued with the action with Alan Haydon and Tommy Francisco on his new Montesa, in a real see-saw dice. The 250 Experts, not to be out done by f:he Novices and Amateurs, clearly indicated why they are in this class. Dennis Huff (Yam) and Rick Pereira did their bit to keep the excitement atfever Pitch, with their fantastic sklll and daring. The "Dunnagan-BSA" dual combination in the 500 Novice go-around, proved ubeatable, with Jimmie and Larry Dunnagan, both BSA mounted flntshed onetwo. Dennis Huff came back to lake the 500 Amateur E>q>ert with his Yamaha, followed by Loren Lowdersmith. The Bigg1es were next up, with Ernie Smithey, Triumph seated, tak1ng the 650 Novices without too much trouble. The 650 Amateurs was a tight contest, with Henry Conklin besting out Jim Lynch by a slim margin, with a BSA and Triumph battle all the way. The 650 ·E>q>erts were out in good order, with Carroll Jackson and Louie Wood tooling their Triumph machines into the first turn, hub to hub, and this closeness prevalled through the race. These two quick ridershadrooster-ta1is kicked up all around the course, seemingly never backing off at anq time, and to do this type of racing, aboard these big bikes lakes a lot of skill and daring... and these guys have abundance of both.
