CO_NSERRIERE SCORES flRSI ASCOT SWEEP . - ~ r.J By Dewitt Thuett The Nortons, playing second fiddle to the Triumph and Harley's this season, finally got into the act on the Ascot oval. The Norton team of Paul Conserriere and Dewayne Keeter got the job done. The two Harold Allison tuned 750's eacb won a heat race and then finished first and second in the trophy dash. It was the first dash win of the year for the Norton and Conserriere. Keeter was a close second. The dash was stopped short when amateur Ted Longwith buried his BSA in the turf on the south turn, trying to beat the experts. Longwith had earlier posted the second best time trial and then won his heat race with some wide open slid1ngon the turns.Ted was hospitalized as he was hit by his macb1ne after he fell off. It was Keeter and not Conserriere who was the early leader in the final. Dewayne looked like he was on his way to his second win of the year when the frame broke on the sixth lap. This put him out of action and in the pits. Conserriere then took over but was pushed most of the way by Michigan rider, Robin Martin, a first year expert on a Triumph who was riding Ascot for only the second time. Paul got more running room in the final laps with Mel Lacher and Dave Smith coming on strong. So strong in fact that both riders passed Martin coming out of the final turn on the last laP. Lacher took second, Smith third and Martin fourth. Sammy Tanner jumped on Tom Rockwood's spare Triumph and finishedl In fifth. Michigan may have come close in the expert final and missed but Michigan did not miss in the Amateur Main Event. Rex Beauchamp, also making his second appearance, gunned into the lead on the fourth lap on his borrowed Triumph and went on to win. Beauchamp became only the second out-of state amateur to ever win a half mile final at Ascot. Ohio'S Tom Heil was the first, about six years ago. This race was also stopped short when Dave Stroman crashed on the seventh lap, taking Chuck Hart down with him. Both riders were later able to walk away. Gary Scott posted an easy heat race win in the novice class but was caught jumping the starter in the final and had to come from last place on the row three penalty line to win his second straight main event in a row. Scott rode a perfect race to lead a Yamaha five rider string across the finish line. San Diego's Carl Byers was second after leading in the early laps. Bob Hill ran third with Tom Wardeman in fourth.
