Australia's newest speedway, Sydney Speedway, can boast about its parking facilities. It is ample, as can be seen in ariel view (above). Top riders at Sydney. Bill Sharp (on right) and Bill Landels get ready for race. The fact that there is a speedway in Australia proves the smallest continent is going for bi kes. Kangarooland Opens Up New Speedway By Peter White Kangarooland has a new speedway - at Canberra in the Australian Capital Terrltory. For many years there has been a lack of entertainment in Canberra. Speed enthusiasts, especially, have been completely neglected. Now, with the new speedway, there can be few complaints. First meeting was on Sunday, June 21 with a near capacity crowd in attendance. No official figure was released by the number of spectators far exceeded the promotion's expectations. Mr. Bernard Morrison, owner of the land, admitted afterwards that he had been caught out. Catering and toilet facilities proved insufficient and access to the ground was difficult. This, despite the construction of a grand three story building conta1ning a canteen, observation deck, announcer's box and toilets. Morrison stated the faults had been well noted and work would begin as soon as poss1ble on rectifying them. He promISed all the flaws would be ironed out for the next meeting. It was hard not to be Impressed with his enthusiasm. Already the project has cost more than $100,000. The track has been picturesquely named 'Tralee' and is a fast quarter mileI'. It is 'D' shaPed and seems a natural solo venue. There is a good deal of banking - perhaps a bit too much on the starting straight- and a surface which is loose and raceable. It has been buut on land which previously contained two dams and now adjoins some of Australia'S finest grazing properti~s• Ten solo r1ders from Sydney travelled down for the opening meet. F our leading Ughts shared in the prizemoney by notching two wins apiece. They were Scotsman Bill Landels (a former team mate of Bert Harkins), John Langfleld, Bob Sharp and Bob Humphries. Racing was excellent throughout. Highlight of the afternoon was the clash of the Big Two - Landels and Lang11eld -in the main scratch race. The pair have been fierce rivals for some time now and at their last encounter things got somewhat out of hand when Lande1s chopped UP Lanfield and caused a four man pile UP. Langfield was the most outstanding rider of the day. He seems to be nearing his top form again an!! should go close to a Test Match place-when the touring teams arrive next summer. It has already been announced by Empire Speedways Pty. Ltd., the main promotional body in this country, that they have contracted a British team and a Russian team to race here next December and January. If both arrangements come off, A ustralia will zoom to new heights in world speedway competition. Already our r1ders are proving tough =-..........
