Luck's With Thorwaldson In Desert Go By Dick Wr1pt RED MOUNTAIN, CALIF. June 28, 197GHope, and then disappointment were In store for Tom Poteet as he had the lead but bad to relent to Rick Thorwaldson because of a flat tire. Thorwaldson charged all the way and took over the first position after the tlve mlle rock pUe at the Desert Knight's Hare Scrambles. Alter the start Poteet had the lead at the smoke bomb followed by Thorwaldson. They wOuld go forty mlles, encountering fUth gear trans, rocks the size of basketbel1s, hll1s and then more fast trans. ThorwaJdson had a big lead coming Into the pits for his gas check with Mlke Patrick on a ยท360 Yamaha second. Rich Thorwaldson tends a blistered hand and talks over his victory with luckless Tom Poteet. Gregg Hawks took 2nd 100 Amateur. Everyone was at the finish line waiting for the leaders to come into slgbt, because in the desert anythlng can happen with all the rocks, and bushes to contend with. But, it was Rick's day and as he pulled in for the win he exclalmed that the course was "beautiful". Patrick held on for second and Kirk followed him In for third. The leader in the 1OOcc class at the smoke bomb was Jeff Wright on a Rickman followed by Gregg Hawks. Ken Buckspan then took over the lead as Jeff fouled a plug at the first check. Mitch Mayes took over the lead later when Buckspan got into trouble too. Terry Clark was the next leader nnW he got knocked off his blke by a blke bike. At this point the hard charging Mr. Morgan, who had got a bad start, moved Into first after all the young tigers had a got at it. Morgan pulled into the fIntsh line for the win, running twenty-first overall. Clark came in second and Buckspan was able to take third. (Results on page 22) Pearblossom, Calif.
