Gustatsen SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, June 21,1970 _ Wb11e setting course Saturday, Continental Motocross Association m8lDbers discovered a sma111ake, and as a result racers were guaranteed a splashlng good time through 40 yards of marshy shoreUne on Sunday. The water started six to twelve Inches deep, but soon after the Imobbles started churning, holes and ruts made favorite paths more than two feet deep by the end of the day. It was def1n1tely a popular spot for spectators, Including one wood coot who stayed on her nest all day watching the racers splash by less than ten yards away. Even the racers enjOyed It, although many hopes for a trophy were drowned there. It was a good way to beat the 90 degree plus heat. It was a day of surprises. Both rider and spectator attendance were down due to Father's Day, the heat, and a rash of Injuries to local riders - except in the 100Cc and Open classes where the turnout was the largest of the year. The course was a surprise as CMA members bad appUed a tractor to the course, greatly widening and revising it. The result was a dry, tast course, except tor those 40 yards of water, with only one very dusty section. It was det1n1tely a course for the big bikes, but riders in all the classes seemed to enjOy it. There were also a number of surprises in the l1na1 results as speed alone was not enough to guarantee a trophy tb1s time. In the third mota, however, the water mastered him and he bad to settle for 3rd overall. Buz Herrington put together three smooth rides to take home tirst, as Larry Knop received the 2nd place brass. In 250B, Marty Kent was going like gangbusters the first mota and the first part of the second and third motos. He managed to bang In 2nd overall as Randy Kerr came out way ahead In the end. In the 175 class, Steve Burgess bad bts water troubles In the first heat, then settled down to take bts customary top t1n1sb. Kevin Croft pushed Steve bard, but the water got to him in the second moto. Jerry Davis looked like an A rider in the first and third 100B motos, and that was enough tor him to beat out smootbriding Rex Johnson. The spectators' favorite, Shaun SPeaker, all 80 pounds of him, picked UP a well-earned third In this class. The Open class was potent1a11y the most dramatic, with Frank Myers and Cal Crosby each earning first and second in the first two motas. Myers got a tr8lDendous start, though, floated across the water, and pulled a 300-yard lead on tile first lap. That was it - Myers first, Crosby second. A very dusty section shortly after the start made CMA decide to run most classes separately, so the racing program was very long. The caution paid off as there were no serious injuries and very few sp111s. Dick Shira in 25M went down bard and sprained an ankle and a knee, and a Husky rider feU off in one of the deepest parts of the waterhole. His bike went down on the right side, however, so it didn't drown out. Alert spectators grabbed the rider so he didn't drown either, and be was soon on bts way again.
