By Maureen Lee ~~~e~dd~m~MreWMft w print but do so gladly If only w pass along a l1We encouragement w a rider who no doubt needs a bit right now. We're sure a lot d you know Lonnie Pererson, especially ~ose d you who rode desert when Lon was mak1ng anameforhimselt on a Rickman. He ~en turned w motocross and a Matco helped along by Frank Cooper, and al~ough Lon wasn't usually ~e first rider inw turn one, it would never be long before he was right uP there in ~e first grouP. Well, Lon ~ in Viet Nam and a telegram came w ~e family last week say1nghe'dbeen wounded in ~e right leg and was in ~e hospital. The address we Mve for him ~ APO San Francisco 96347, so how about dropping him a card or a note? It's liWe things Uke' ~t ~t can make you get better in a hurry. The Peterson's are a complete motorcycle family, from sister Tina ~ough ~eir dad Ken who served on ~e Competition Committee in 1967 and ~e whole family belongs to ~e SMmrocks M.C. Don't cringe, but we've been reading one of our favorite books again, ~eAMA Sportsman Competition Rule Book and here'S one w mull over a bit. On page 21 under equipment stalldards, iI2 states "Gasoline must be readily obta1nab1e coinmerical gasoline and shall be limited w the octalne rating d ~e brand used. Additions or cMfiges d any nature in ~e gasol1ne are prohibited. Penalty for violation d ~ standard shall be indef1n1te suspension." Same rule ~ also in the Prdessional rule book. Now, how about all ~ose ads we've been seeing loudlY wuting additives for more power and being advertised by some d ~e most famous names in ~e District? Hhmmm? Riders are st1ll wondering why scrambles are going down ~e tube what wi~ canceDat10ns by clubs (one club wanted w cMnge its two scrambles dates w motocross events, petitioned ~e Competition Committee and was turned down so picked uP its marbles and just cancelled out) and clubs not wanting w~ow scrambles anymore due w ~e work inYOlftd and the tact tbatsomedthem just Mre!y bl'eak eftn. We know ~t clubs are not allowed w make tremendous prdlts and besides ~ey are in it for ~e sport d ~e~, but tra!lksst1llMftw be paid for, trophies bought and ~e workers for a race sure as heck earn a dlnner on ~e club treasury after a long day. So we did a l1We figuring on how ~ll ~e desert clubs do compared w~e scrambles clubs. We Mven't included motocross but we'll say~,lfyou~ow a motocross ~e setting uP events .isn't so hard as scrambles and the club will make more money as the entry fees are higher•. So, we'll take a run wi~~eehundred riders. Starting with ~e desert and a Hare and Hound (and when did a Hare and Hound ever Mve so few entries as 3OO?) their wtal take d entries at $4.00 per head comes w $1200.00. The use d ~e land is free and ~e riders pay 25~ for ~e ambulance on stand-by. Spectawrs pay no~, so ~e $1200.00 is free and clear except for lime and ribbon markers and the trophies. Take 300 scrambles riders. At most tracks the host club gets 50% d ~e gate plus all ~e entry fees, so we'll use ~ as a yardstick. 300 riders at $2 .00, plus the 50% d the gate fee (75~) for same riders and we'll chuck in 300 spectawrs also at the 75~ per head fee. Total income would be $1050.00. Out of ~ ~e club has w buy trophies (we didn't even guesstimate how much ~ey would cost, but ~ey alsoMve to pay for track rental. One popular track receives $225.00 per race, leaV1ng ~e club w1~ $825.00, so right ~ere ~e desert club has already gotten $375.00 in ~e kitty ahead d ~e scrambles club. Sometimes a club has only had 185 riders and ~t is where ~e money is, in entry fees, not ~e 50% d ~e gate, so If you wonder why clubs are just not bo~ering to ~ow scrambles, do a liWe work w1~ a pencil, and you'll see why. The Jackrabbits just ~ew a scramble at Elsinore, estimares are approll1mately 1000 ~ough ~e gate and 200 riders, so once again just guesstimating ~eir Income was $1150.00, but Elsinore only charges $150.00 for track rental so tbat gaft a bit extra w the kitty but don't forget tMt out of ~e 1000 sPeCtators some were kids and didn't pay tull fee. Hope you see what we're trying w show you, and PinPoint one d the reasons scrambles are gradnalIy taning by ~e wayside. Klaus Takes Heart 0' Telas Professional' Short Track Race By John Blanton WACO, TEXAS JuDe 14, 19'70 - John Klaus, Expert rider from Houston, took top honors in the opening indoor professional short track at ~e Heart 0' Texas Coliseum here Wday, but he came in ~e bl!-Ck way w do it. The start d ~e 15-lap event on ~e liS-mile concrete tracksawK1ausl1n1ng uP on ~e back row d ~e f1eld d twleve. Beg1nn1ng w1~ Houstoolan Darryl Hurst, a quick succession d riders took tile lead and lost it. In - ~e preceding Sportsman class events, Bobby Ables, Yamaha, of Houston wok first in ~e 125cc class, followed by WestDn Powers and Joe Martin. 200cc winners were Danny Forke, Yamaha, from San Anwnlo, Barry Patrick and Larry Friemel. Yet ano~er HoustDn short tracker, Denny HortDn, Ossa, won ~e 250cc class, followed by Phil Darcy and Rickey Kelley. Apparently there is some short track act1v1ty in Houswn ~ese days. John (43r) Klaus slips his Honda under Robert (40) Osborne on his way to victory. Paul Biggs (Bultaco) dove ahead d Five prdessional riders posted ~e Hurst momentarily then slid off. Next, low time d el8ftn seconds during ~e Winston Stelter, Ossa, nosed out Hurst trtals. ~ is a 41 m1le per hour aftrand Lelancl Rogers, Suzukl, passed ~em age over ~e ftry tight course, making ~, only w tall in short order • for some very close racing. Klaus' dpportun1ty came just after ~e The 0D1y serious accident occured halfway point, whton Hurst slid under during ~e tirst semi-main, when Mike Roseborrough collided w1~ Terry Mc Stelter from behind, tak1ng them ~ out long enough w let John's Honda by. Donald, and ~e two of them cUmbed the SecOlld place went w Freddie Beall, wall, giving spectawrs in ~e $3.50 box Harley-Davidson, and third and four~ seats ~eir tull money's ~. There were no serious injuries, but bo~ bikes went w ~e quick cMnge twins, Stelter and Hurst. were crunched, so alternates Hal StockThe $600 dollar purse was divided uP ton and Robert Osborne got w see acamong the top eight f1n1shers in ~e tion in ~e final. f1na1, ~e top eight in the semt-mains A.s might be expected w1~ racing ~ close there were several foul claims, and tile top twelve in tile heats. Even so, JolIn's earnings for the night was $117, but in fine Texas tradition they were not bad considering tbat he took low settled afterwards in ~e parking lot, w1~ut troubling ~e AMA. money in ~ his heat and his' semt(Results on page 22) final.
