"l Action he tried. The fact that Rick was hardly closing the gap between hlmself and Sonny showed how hard Nutter was trying, but Scott was trying that much harder and held the same lead for two more laps to take a well deserved win. It Is a known fact that some of the handicap mains are won by low-handicap riders for the simple reason that the better riders do not have enough time , to work their way through the pack to over take them before the checkered flag, but this time there was no thought of this as Scott proved he could hold his own against the best by keeping his lead the same for two laps being chased by Sonny Nutter and Rick Woods. The fans also voiced their approval, with a huge ovatiOll when Autrey waS presented the troPhy by the lovely trophy girl, MIss R"oxy Hots. The event was called the best pairs series which matched the Bast brothers, Mike and Steve, against Larry Helnselmon and Sonny Nutter. ThIs event started off to be the faStest event of the night. A little too fast perhaps, for the unfavorable track conditions caused youn MIke Bast to lose control and take a tremendous splll In front of Sonny Nutter. Only Sonny's Instant reaction and super riding talent kept this from being a serious accident. Sonny laid his bike down In a split second and managed to pull the front wheel out of a direct colli s ion course with the sprawled Bast. Mike was able to return to the pits with the helP of the rest of the family, but was unable to compete Torsten Hallman Racing, Inc. Orange County By Mike CapaUte COSTA MESA, June 26, 1970- There wu no doubt In anyone's mind Friday night as to who was the top rider at the Orange County Fairgrounds. Speedway ace Sonny Nutter brought home the glory for the Great Bear Racing Team as be stormed to the win In the Seratch Main. Sonny's wIJIn1!lg form Is an example of determ1ilatlon that can be traced by his record In the scratch mains at this oval. In his first four times In the scratch main, he has flnlshed second three times and fourth olice. Twice he was beaten out by Rick Woods and twice by BID Cody, and the man who quoted that 'revenge Is sweet' must have been th1nking of Sonny. Last on the Ust and you might say he Is a team by himself was Rick Woods riding for South Bay Cycles, a formidable grOuP of opponents to say the least. Oft the Une, It was BID Cody Into the corner first with Woods right behind him on the inside and Nutter _right there on the outside. The crowd leaped to Its feet as Nutter SUddenly put on a terrlfic burst of spesd and took over the lead on the outside coming out of the corner as Cody moved Into seconcLspot. BID seemed to be having handling probiems as he was getting Into trouble In every corner and Woods moved Into second and settled down to take Nutter, but Sonny wasn't having any of It and while Woods was at him all the way, Sonny did everything right and crossed the Une a sure winner.
