By the th1rd lap Lawwlll had moved uP into fourth position, and he was galning rapidly on Markel, Roeder threw his chain and Markel began to lose traction in the turns. By the seventh lap, Mert was in th1rd, ga1n1ng rapidly on Palmgren. Suddenly on lap twelve, Mert gave out again, coasting around to aheart-breakliIg stoP. L1ke the cam shaft at Santa Fe, his throttle cable had braken. Mert commented later, "You don't see many eighteen-hundred dollar throttle cables." Sehl had disappeared in the distance by lap tltteen, shutting off for turn one just as Palmbren was gassing his Triumph out of turn four. Bart was running his own strange race, sliding around uP near the fence and losing positions every lap. Rall began a big push on Palmgren, attempting to drive under him on the turns. On lap eighteen he tralled only by inches, and on the yellow flag lap he squeezed by just in time to cross the line in the lead. With Sehl holding the championship tight in his right fist, the crowd was concentrating on the antics of Rall and Palmgren. Larry made a final charge in turn three, shot uP to Rall, and went too far, off of the groove. Rall secured his second place with a fast drive to the line as Larry slowed to regain control. Mert sat in the pits sipping a beverage. He didn't appear to be angry. ,He merely seemed puzzled, trying to comprehend the absurd th1ngs that had happened to him th1s weekend. He works for the Department of Water and Power, andmotorcyclingis his hobby. 1 asked about his plans for the future, but he was uncertain. Did they include the International Six Days Trails? Bob sa1d he would have liked to have ridden it, but at 44 he thought he was getting a little old for that one. I'm not. so sure. Racers seem to develop quickly, have their day in the sun, and then disappear almost instantaneously. Enduro riders seem to mature more slowly, like good wines. What they lose in reflexes, they gain in judgment and experience. 1 won't be surprised to see Bob Steffan in the lSDT, As I was packing uP 1 asked, offhand, how many kids they had. "Four," said Bob. "Two," said Peggy, simultaneously. Bob corrected to six, and they both started laughing. I'm not sure those are the right numbers, but it doesn't matter. However many there are, they've got olce people to grow uP with. For the lady who wanted a story about incredible hardshiPs, and carrying the bike over the mountain on bruised and bloody shoulders, l' m sorry. I guess 1 blew it again.
