Our bubbling fe male member of the Victors M/C is a suPergirl who is out in the desert every week. Alter her tblrd try at Greenhorn she f1Dally made the finish, all 500 miles on a gutless lOOcc thing. Lynn was over· joyed that she finished the 'horn' and her many friends were happy for her too. AND YOUR PAPER DIDN'T EVEN MENTlON IT. Instead another female got credit for being the only girl to finish. For Shame! Hang Your Head In DIsgrace. This is not the only time Lynn has been sllghted. At Elsinore ("The Big Farce") Lynn had lapped all the other girls in the Powder Puff Event and the club with its suPer video tape scoring system put her somewhere around fifth. The racers know where they were running and so did many of the people in the pits. I know the problems, manpower, and checldng system used at Catalina years ago and they had their hands full keeping track of just 200 riders on a ten" mile race course. How many rode at Elsinore? Anyway, Lynn W1lS0n is one at. the finest people out there and is a credit to our sport. I think it's about time things began to happen her way. DAVE EKINS Van Nays, Cal. WELL BABY, THINK AGAIN Perhaps you know the scene I am about to ,describe. You and your buddies have been riding around In the hills for about an hour or two when the Highway Patrol car pulls uP to your truck. Either politely or with his ticket book, he tells you that you have to leave the area. You ask, why should we leave, there aren't any people out here to bother. But he tells you again that you have to leave. So you pack uP and head for home. Another good day shot and another place where you can't ride. All the way home you gripe and gripe about that lousy #$%<;&. cop who kicked you out. Well, baby, think again. Many times I've been out to ride and what do I see? Beer cans, trash, and garbage strewn about! it's sickeningI Published weekly except the first and last week of the calendar year by Cycle News, Inc., Post Office Box 498, Long Beach, California, ai so pubII shers of Cycle News East; and Dixie Cycle News. The wrongdoing that was done by that idiot at Holiday Hill couldn't be undone by a thousand good so tbougbtless. Some of the dirtiesl places I've seen are out where peOPle go riding. Sure, for some it's a big joke, but when the public otnclals see thts how else can they think but "Shut it dOwn," and so you can kiss another spot goodbye. This litter problem is easily avoidable, Take a trash box with you. Make it a point to take back what you brought, your beer cans, bottles, papers. Better yet, pick UP trash that might have already been there, leave the place better looking than when, you found it. And thts takes very little effort to do. BLM Board Talks Bikes deeds. We motorcycllsts have a civic responsib1l1ty. We now number Into the thousands and by such numbers flock to our favorite riding places. We cannot hide ourselves away and·do,as weplease anywhere. We cannot Indiscriminately destroy something that is not ours even though no one is looldng, nor can we turn our publ1c lands Into garbage heaps. We have the responsib1l1ty to behave as voice. c1vt11zed human beings, not as fllty, stuPid, plundering anlmals. With even a mln1mum of effort, we can make our sport one that can be admired and looked uPon as an excellent avenue of recreat1ona1 , pleasure. It doesn't take much to destroy, but neither does it take much to improve and build. RICHARD CONTLA Culver City, Cal. Another thing is the behavior that we display. Sure you want to have fun, but things can get out of hand. Recently I was riding at one of my favorite spots, a place called Holiday Hill, Off Hlghway 138 about ten mUes out Highway 99. After turning off 138, you have to drive down a few miles on dirt road to get past the farms, then you get to open riding area. I had been riding there several weekS wltbout any trouble from the farmers. But about a month ago, the cops came In and kicked everyone out. Well, that Idlled that day and goodbye to another spot. And I griped about the "lousy cops" and the "stinken farmers". But the next day I found out the bitter truth. Some idiot on a bike had gone on a wild rampage through some farmer's crops doing heavy damage. The farmer had no recourse but to call the authorities, for In effect, the bike rider was destroying his livelihood. Because of some idiot's stupidity, many others had to suffer the consequences. We bike riders of all people are the ODes who should be most conscious abOut our public image. Many people uPon seeing a motorcycle think "Look, there's another one of those hoodlum bikers." The stigma of the outlaw motorcycle gang terrorizing towns is stlU l1ngerm.r PLEASE EXPLAIN Land Use Meet S.et I have been going to Ascot for three years watching some of the good riders go from Amateur to Expert. Please explain why Tom Rockwood has a National Number when Dave Aldana and Don Castro were number first and second Amateurs last year• mLLTURNER Los Angeles, Cal. Both Da've and Don are sUll enjoyinll: their rookie years as Experts. AMA procedure provides that no first year Ex- . perts will be issued National numbers. Next year however both boys should be at the front of the line when the liew Amnbers are handed out..,Ed. CU~M WHERE'S MY TROPHY? A1ADE SKID-SHOES Could the Jester's M.C. tell me how I can get my trophy from their recent race? I missed getting it. And I would like to tell the peOPle wbo put the Sunday 'j // motocross races OD at AlICot, (especial- --- ly Mr. Carroll and Bobble Balley) if you want a good turn out why don't you have ,/ your races when C.M.C. isn't having a race. You'll find your turnout will increase quite a bit. Also let's have a motocross race, not a TT race. ROBERT C. COPE 2030 N. Olive Santa Ana, California • . ASSISTANCE APPRECIATED I would like to ~ Tony Prado of the Masterllnks M.C. and Wes of the Buzzards M.C. for their help In extingu1sh1ng my flaming Husky at the Foothlll Hawks race. Many thanks. GENE WELLER Jackrabbits M,C. SAN BERNARDINO, CALIF. June 11-12, 1970 - The Bureau of Land Management's California State Advisory Board met here for two days to map plans for future desert usage, including a number of actions that pertain directly to motorcycles and other off-road vehicles. And although DO definite action was taken, a number of resolutions were adopted that could sharply hamstring the use of desert lands by bikes at a future date. Essentlally, BLM otflclals seemed to take a middle-of-the-road stand between delegates at the meeting who proposed spec1f1c areas restricted to motorcycles, and those who proposed spec1f1c areas restricted to motorcycles, and those who proposed very strict controls over all bike riders. On the one hand they weren't exactly anti-molorcycl1ng. but on the other, they dido't know exactly what to do about thts fast growing form of recreation. Under the BLM's "multi-purpose" concept. federal 1ands should he carefully analyzed as to potential use, and ass1gDed In such a way as to make as many people happy as much of the time. Howard Harrls, cba1rman at BLM's Off-Road Veh1cle Advisory Council (ORVAC) reported on the work at his group, clDcluding that lnd1scr1m1nate (Continued on page 25). LOMITA, CALlF. June 15, 1970 - Arrangements are beginning to take shape for the June 26 meeting at Melodyland Theater In Anaheim between government aftlclals and representatives of motorcycling, according to Tom Cosgrove, owner of Pac1f1c Coast Honda and organizer of the meeting. Land Management, California Dept. of Parks and Recreation, County and City government, Law Eoforcement agenc1es, as well as motorcycle dealers, club representatives and enthusiasts are expected to attend. A movie star or two may even be there, Cosgrove said. The Honda dealer said that problems facing motorcycllsts w1ll be discussed and then the floor will be opened for questions. "HOPefullY," Cosgrove added, "we can at least get the ball rolling toward better commun1cat1ons. And from there••• well, who knows?" The meeting ls open to the public, with business scheduled to begin at 7:.30 p.m. at the theater, located across the street from Disneyland.
