~HONDA, ~ en GARDENA, CALIF. June II, 1970 - A ~ pair of also-rans figured prominently ~ into the pIcture at the CMC's weekly, to:l Ascot park motocross Thursday night, -l as the Honda 100SL proved Its cornU petitiveness by placing second, third and fifth in the 100cc Jr. class, wh11e Expert AJS rIder, Jim West, thrUied cheering grandstand spectators with several dazzling performances of a nip and tuck racing with the more heralded JIm Wilson. Led by Pac1f1c Coast Honda rIder, Jim Boldt, the three Hondas were always near the front of the pack, and in the second moto, actually f1n1sbed one, two, three. Jeff Cruzon, who last week won the 125cc Jr. event on a Bultaco, won Thursday night's 100ccgoonaKawasakl, w1nn1ng two motos in a display of skUlful riding. But the big news was st1ll Honda. There should be little doubt that the four-stroke sIngle Is. indeed. a threat to ligbtweigbt class ·domtnaIice by the two-strokes. Boldt, who bad sh1ft·lever trouble in the fIrst and third moto, is expected to bave the problems Ironed out by next week and could very well find himself on top of the beap. Meanwh1le, JIm West, in afrantlc display of r1d1ng, gave Wilson and his covey of Greeves' Grlffons a real run for their money. When WUson was in top form, the tall, lanky West was eIther passing b1m or right on his tan. And the crowd loved It. West, probably because of his size, looks a bit unga1nly' wh11e streaking around obstacles at Ascot, and you momentarUy expect him to come tumbllng off a jump, AJS in the driver's seat. But not so. The young member of the West Coast Motocross Team was in absolute control of his machine and pIcked up.a pair of wins for second place in the 500cc class and tfUrd place in the two-fifty. John DeSoto, with three consIstent second phces, walked away with overall bonors In the 250cc Expert go, whlle WIlson parlayed hIs two wins in the 500cc class into first place cash. WEST STAR AT ASCOT MX be advises rIders to arrIve early to Insure plenty of practice time. PIts open at 4:30 p.m. Spectator turn out was UP from last week, and, reportedly, It even pleased Ascot's managemant. Racing gets underway at 7:30 p.m. this Thursday, with Experts competing for a $200 purse. (Results on page 22) G Ron DeSoto, with two wins on his CZ, looked l1ke a sure bet coming into the final 250cc Jr. moto. But a back-of-thepack start resulted In only a fifth place f1n1sh and second place class honors. CZ mounted Fred Cox won the last event, and, with two earlier second places, captured overall honors. More than 240 rIders competed Thursday nlgbt, and at least another 30 were turned away because CMC ran out of entry blanks. CMC presIdent, Stu Peters, had promised to have ample entry blanks on hand for thIs Thursday's event, but Jim (3) Wilson, Jim (NX) Dawson and Tim (11) Hart discuss the manner in which they will enter the first turn. loco'Hero Of T.J.
