Rich had enjoyed a good lead unW a bush reached out and turned bls gas petcock off. It took him a minute or so to figure out what happened and that's all1t took for Whitey. Steve Borden was the first Novice in on a big Husky, Steve has only been r1d1ng a year and th1s is the first time he has taken the top Novice spot. There were over six hundred entries and the weather was just right. After the banner drOPped, Larry Bergquist of the Buzzards M.C. on a Bullaco had the lead at the second smoke bomb followed at twenty feet by Rick Shirey #3 of the Chargers M.C. also on a Bullaco. The first loop was dUsty, as Shirey put it after the race, "It WlP:S Uke a long start- 1ng area wide, with lots of traUs and plenty of dust" • Thorwaldson had a good lead coming into the pits after the first loop, with Martino second. Most of the riders sa1d the second loop was more full, not so much dUst, with a single trail, but with a lot of dltferent types of terrain. After collecting bls win just ahead of ThorwaJdson, Martino sa1d, "It was a good run but my header pipe broke off ' on the second loop." Mike Patrick #lx was third overall and winner of the 250 class with a Yamaha. Al Baker was fourth on a 250 Yamaha, followed by the amazIng Eric Jensen #10x, on a Minuscule 125cc Sachs. He is some tuner, rider combination. Gene Cannady was next on a 201cc Sachs; Jerome Ruzuke was the first Amateur in and Sam Burg was the second Amateur • Steve Borden took first Novice, and Roger Raddell took second Novice. The 100cc class went of! ten m1niJtes after the big bikes. Jack Morgan was Jack (1) Morgan and t+D rider Terry (2) Clark are shown dueled most of the way and finished in numerical order. the way. They went around the entire loop wheel to wheel and came in the pits side by side. Both got quick gas checks, and went out in a flat out drag. This lasted halfway around the second loop when Morgan took the advantage on a rocky down h111 and came for the trallbike class win and a 54th overall. Morgan worked up to about a minute lead over Clark's H-D. Mark Rader was third, Allen Lund was the first Amateur in on a Sachs, and Jerry H1ll had a very good ride for his third time out laIdng first Novice on his Rickman. A lot of things happened out there, a small plane watching the race hit a telephone Une and the flyers walked away from a forced landing; a teenager tried to steal a Hodaka at the signup and got 'walked on by the 240 pound owner;and the Desert Turtles M.C, put on a good race.
