Sidehackers Throw lotocross At Baymare ,125 Novice riders sai I by as things got rolling for Side hack Assoc. Motocross. By Dave Smead No sidehacks ataStdeh8.ckAssoctation motocross? Not unless they rode their own event and they were too busy for that. At Bay Mare on June 14th there were sometimes more flagmen thanrtders and that doesn't count the starter or the six people scoring. This 15 one AMA club that showed uP In organized force to put on a great racel They even put some teeth Into the no pit racing edict by dtslJllLl1fY1ng six riders. The Novice riders turned out In force (3 divisions of 125cc), although the Am/ Ex. riders were few. Nobody compla1ned about the action though. In the first division of 125cc Novice, Tom Zahnter on a Hodaka SUPer Rat took home top honors. He won the first and second race but had mechanical problems In the third. Jim Crook on a new Sachs motocross plugged a main jet with d1rt In the first race but came back for a second and a first to knock down second place. Division 2 of the 125cc Novices was won by Randy Myers on a Bultaco. This youngster won all of his races. Once In a wh11e Ken Brandenburg would pressure Randy, but Randy kept h1s- cool and won. The third division of 125cc Novices was a wire to wire contest between Kevin Dwyer, CUff White and Bruce McLeod. Bruce won the first race with KevIn second and CUff third. Cliff won the final race. When the dust settled and the pOInts were tall1ed it was Dwyer, White and McLeod. The 125cc Am/Ex. was a race to behold. It appeared that Al ,·G1z1 and his Bultaco were the fastest combination on the course but Al also rode his bike on the side too much. When he gooled Bob Hershey 011 a Yamaha went flying past. Scott Sivadge, also Yamaha mounted, followed Hershey. In the end the score read Hershey, Sivadge and Eg1z1. The 250Cc Novices were split Into two well mateheddivis1ons. The first division was won by Chuck Esterline on a Pumfrey Bultaco. He was pressured In every race by a Pumfrey teammate Joe Bonello. The race In division 2 of the 250 Novices was won by DonArmstrongeach time. Chasing Armstrong's Yamaha was Rawday Roche's Bultaco and Mike Renno's Husky. The 250 Seniors were given the grand tour of the course by Bob Ewing and John Maynard won one on a Yamaha but had to glve overall honors to Ewing and Husqvarna. Ewing couldn't seem to get off the line but from that point on he worked his throttle like a switch, on or off. No race can be quite as spectacular as the 500Cc Novices. When $60,000 of machinery lines uP ~th 2000 horsepower, what good is snow fence? Mike Casper did an admirable job of navigating to nail down top place. He won the first two races and relaxed his way Into, a third In the final race. Another Matco rider W1U1am Baxter put together three good races for second overall. The 500 Seniors had to yield to Matco flYers Terry BUton and Bill Payne. BUton won the first race, unloaded hard In the second and came back faster than ever In the third race. Bill Payne just went fast and took three seconds despite losing a chain In the second moto. For those of you that remember Octob!lr 19, 1969, the last Sidehack motocross, forget it. These guys were so organized and efficient that the ambu, lance didn't leave all day last SlIDday.
