Q') SOUTHERN CALIfORNIA SPEEDWAY ACTION ~ By Mike Capalite ~ . Dennis Gildenhaus matches crossed up slides with Bill Cody. Story and Photos by Dennis Greene over his teammate Big Mike Conly. Bill then came back in the Handlcap Main to BAKERSFIELD, CAL. June 13, 1970Team racing is what the Bakersfield fans want to see. Once again promoter Gene Rhyne matched the undefeated Bakersfield team against a new team from Paramount, Cal., made uP of Gary and Butch Fishburn, Jerry Singer and T.V. star Billy Gray. Although the final total score was not as overwhelming as last week the Bakersfield team once again came out on top 13 to 11, much to the pleasure of the local fans. Although Bill Cody is not from the Bakersfield area he is probably the most popular rider to set a wheel on the track. He took an impressive scratch main win add a little more glory to the team with a first. Mike again came in right behind Bill for second place. If 2 main event wins were not enough for Bill's fans, he also won an earlier match race between Jim Gresham and himself. Some of the newer speedway fans at Bakersfield who have only heard of Rick Woods were disappointed when he was unable to make the program due to injuries he sustained on his European tour. Although he did ride .Friday night he aggravated the injury to his hand to the point where he could not hang on to the -ne House of MAICO I HARLEY-DAVIDSON I I.D. June 12, 1970 Friday night was not a Rick Woods nlght as the Huntlngton Beach speedway ace returned to the action at the Orange County Fairgrounds track atter his triP to Czechslova.lda. MaJdng the triP behind the Iron Curtain with the C- Z lmporter, Rick.was ~ble to get a cOuPle starts in some of the local SPeedway Races over there. Rick had some bad luck in one of the races as something flew off one of the other rider's bike and struck Woods in the hand, (they never did find out what it was) it almost tore his. glove off and lacerated his left hand very badly. To hear-Rick tell it, it is rather humorous although it could have been tragic. It seems that when they hauled him off to get his hand taken care of, the importer, Joe Kubicek who was also Rick's interpreter stayed at the track to take care of the machine. When they got Rick to the hospital, they opened uP the wound and scrubbed it out with a toothbrush and alcohol and sewed it up, all without benefit of any painkiller whatsoever. As they couldn't understand Rick and he couldn't understand them, they merely ignored his protests. When Woods returned to the United States last Wednesday, the hand was badly infected and a trip to the doctor put him in the hospital for an operation on Thursday to remove a splinter of steel and some cinders from the wound. Despite this, Rick was at the track Friday night ready to race•• No doubt Woods wished he had stayed home as his first race of the evening resulted in a bad spill in the fir st corner which was a great surprise to the crowd as Rick rarely unloads. He had appauntly hurt his hand and there was concern in the stands as to whether or not he would be able to come back out for the long-awaited match race with 'Wild Bill' Cody. Of the slxprevious races held here, Rick has won the first four while Cody has taken the last two while Woods was overseas, for this reason the announcement that Woods would continue to ride was met with a roar of approval from the fans.
