,. - Coppage Takes TT In Warlnup For National By N.A. W1ll1ams Photo by Don Carter CASTLE ROCK, WASH. May 30, 1970At the end of a warm day the TT race at Castle Rock, Wash. got started Just 'before sundown, with afield of 144 riders coming out for practice. The heat races saw 66 Novices try for a spot in the Main, with 38 Amateurs trying their hand at it next, and 40 Experts competing last. With e11minations over, there were 10 riders in ,,--the Novice Main, 12 in the Amateur Main, and 12 in the Expert Main. This was the fir st TT of the season for the Mt. St. Helens Club and they had a very good turnout of both riders and spectators. This was the second of a three day Memorial weekend ra~e series in this area. This annual race at CasUe Rock al- ways attracts a large turnout of riders, as they prepare for the national held here on July 10th and 11th. After a few bad starts, at the first of the races, things seemed to setue down and run smoothly. The races were so good and so close that the CrOwd was on their feet, cheering most of the time. Expert Bm Elder started out the night strong but started fall1ng back in about the middle of the MaIn. Dusty Coppage won the Expert feature but was third in the Trophy Dash. He had been disqualified the night before. at Sidewinders and he was out to make uP for it. In the Novice event, Gary Kapus and Randy Scott carried their batue over from the night before. Scott took the TrOPhy Dash and Main Event, with Kapus taking second in both. (Results on page 22) Mark Williams Beats Hotshoes At Portland Professional TT's By J. Lacey PORTLAND, OREGON, May 29, 1970On this windy and chilly night, the Sidewinders M.C. hosted Class C TT racing at its best, with an $1800 purse! On hand to do batUe with the local shoes were nationally ranked Skip Van Leeuwen and Dusty Coppage, and the stands were fUled with screaming, cheering fans. Leading off the evening's events were the time trials, fastest being turned by Amateur Darrell Cotton. Novice Gary Kapus won his third straight Trophy Dash and still leads in the Novice points, but Randy Scott (Bul) once again outrode the litue Kapus in the Main, taking the lead near the half-way point and going away with the win. Neal Hulet, on what must be the fastest Honda in these par-ts, was third. One restart was required in the Amateur Main after two separate crashes eliminated six riders, three of them unable to continue because of bent equipment. Eddie Herrmann (Tri) led from start to finish, while young Darrell Cotton moved uP from last on the restart to second before his engine went off song. Second was Tom Ph11l1ps (Tri), Harold Morse (Tri) third. National Number 70, Mark W1ll1ams, aboard a 650 Ka wasak1 led the l5-lap Expert Main Event from start to f1n1sh, showing everyone why he was lop TT Expert in the nation last year. Sonny Burres (Tri) held second for four laps until passed by Jimmy Smith (Trl); .rack Mott (BSA) fen on lap two, Van Leeuwen unloaded on lap three, but these two were uP quickly and rejoined the fray. Things then setued down for a bit until Ike Reed (Tri) drove lU'ound Burres into third, whlle Van Leeuwen pulled off for a moment then got going again. At the same time Burres was again passed, tb1s time by Trophy Dash winner Glen Adams (Nor). And so the flag fell, with W1l11ams taking his first Main Event of the new season, Smith was second, Reed tblrd, Adams fourth, Burres fifth. The product w1l1 be distributed to the motorcycle industry by Webeo, Inc. and the1r network of dealers. T.B.F. tire balancing fluid employs the age-old princ1p1e of centrifUgal force. When an out-of-balance condition exists on a rolling tire, the axle center moves toward the out-of-balance condition. This movement is echoed throughout the machine in the form of vibration, creating a long radius on the back side or light side of the tire ll/ld rim.
