u.s. RIDERS TOP ENSENADA MOTOCROSS De LaTorre Sweeps ~. for Second Time ~ ~ -J u :>.. u By Rich Hoffman ENSENADA, MEXICO, May 31,19'70- It almost a clean sweep by American riders in the 4th motocross of the season, sponsored by the Ensenada Baja Racing Association. For the second race in a row, Paul De LaTorre went home with three f1rst place trophies, although he had to come from behind to .catch Lee Fabry and Oscar Lujan to take the checkeredfiags. The 125cc class was won by Oscar Lujan of Mexical1 on a l00cc HOnda. And not only did he win, but he put on quite a show for the local spectators, rld1ng about half the race on the rear wheel. The only complalnt was the dust. It's just a Uttle scary to come over a jump lUId not know wbat you'd find on the other side. As in past races, the E.B.R.A. off1c1als were more than helpful lUId spec1al thanIts must go to Rolando {;ardenas and Hector Sarabia for a well-organized was race. The trophy presentation was held in downtown Ensenada at the Hotel MonteBy Maureen Lee District 37 has a new SecretaryTreasurer, so club secretaries please take note of the change. Following Ben Bot's res!gDat1on, Jack Hurley, the ambulance co-ordinator for the District was elected to the offlce. His address is on Encouragement and enthusiasm is plentiful at the twice monthly motocross south of the border. Mar, with a Uve bBDd, daDe1ng and "mucho cerveza" for everyone. A spec1al trophy was presented to Laurie Fabry for he1ng the f1rst woman rider to compete with the men on the Enseoada Motocross course. mittee reallY gets it in the neck when they hand down an unpopular PeanIty and the squeaking is still going on loudly over their penalties handed down on the Red Dots run but aU seven of the men are competition rider!! themselves, they know the score and wbat goes on and cheating has become a way of Ute to some appropriate steward along with the infraction, that you caugbt him pit rac1ng or It he was really showl,ng off and endangering the spectators and others, turn him in to the Competition Committee. They'll take care of him for you lUId the Ute you saYe may be your ownl Don't forget the big h1kea run f1rst at scram6Dn' arouniJ the ridlni number appUcations, but It you don't have one handY, it's Jack Hurley, 18414 Haas Avenue, Torrance, Ca. 90504, Phone 329-7761. So aU correspondence, sanctions, changes of address etc. should be sent to him wh1le I w111 still handle changes in club delegates and pass on any information to Jack that he needs for his records. We surely wish him well as it isn't an easy job he's undertaken. Ben Bok dld a flne job whUe in office and worked extremely hard before having to reslgo for personal reason. The District w111 miss him. It you thlnk the men working for a District as large as ours have it easy and it's a lot of tun, tun, fun, you've another think coming. It's hard work lUId they often have to give uP doing somethlng they want to do to attend to their duties. Sure, it is tun at times and the sat1sfaction of putting somethlng back lnto your favorite sport is enormous but it's still work. At times the Competition Com- riders and they want to stop it. No rider gets penal1zed even after the penalty has heen set without he1ng lnvlted to a meeting where he can speak for himself. It he's lnterested enough or has been falsely accused he'll show but In many cases a rider knows he's been caugbt out lUId won't show his face whlch means he's gullty• Penalties are getting stlffer too, and It you're not tamUlar with wbat can happen to you as a .Distrlct rider, it can range from the referee of the host club disqualifying you for the day (no points or trophy) to his turning your name lUId riding number along with your 1nfraction to the Competition Committee. It you've reallY made an idiot out of yourself you can lose polnts, and even lose the rlgbt to ride for a whOe. The suggestion is now that the District really start going after pit racers. So club referees, you have the right to dlsquallty any rider for the day by turn1ng his rldlng number In to the Jack Rabbit scrambles so show uP early at Elsinore June 13th, besides it's always tun to Usten to the ultrallgbts snlve11ng gently because they have to walt for you for a changel BRYANS RETIRES RalPh Bryans has retired from road racing.
