TT's Run Despite Rain Threat By Don Carter CLACKAMAS, ORE. May 22, 1970otriclals held uP signs at the Sidewinders Pro TT, and riders left their motorcycles loaded due to the threat of rain. The track crew worked fever1sbly, on the track - trying to save the course after a rain storm hit about 5 p.m. Then the weather took a turn for the better. SUDBhtne poked through a llttle, the referee decided that the crew's efforts would be successflJ1, and the riders started unloadtng. . The track was naturally a llttle wet Second Successful Moto Held At Inter-Am Site By Kevin HID STARTUP, WASH. May 24, 1970 - For the second week in a row, the Everett Motorcycle Club put on one of their very successful motocrosses at this scenic spot in the Cascades, scene of last year's Seattle Inter-Am. There 15 agoodpossiblllty that we will see no more races bere this summer due to opposition from local residents. Another victim of motorcycle prejudice. Pat Marinachi seemed to have it all his way in the first moto of the 125 class until the end of the third lap when be and his Bultaco went tIlelr separate ways at full speed on the main stralgbt. The crash put him back to sixth and Dan Nelson on another Bul took the win. In the second moto it looked llke Pat would make UP for his bad luck by w1nn1ng big but this time be threw a chin and just gave uP in disgust. Nelson took this moto as well and, with a third in the third moto, he got first overall. In for second was John Beals riding a Yamaha. Dominating the 250 class were three very closely matched riders. In the lead most of the day, Bob UnderhW on a Greaves rode a smooth and very fast race in beating out Ricky Poulin, one of the area's fastest motocrossers. Charging bard all the way, Duane Mann pUShedhis CZ to the llmit and provided many exciting moments on his way to third Races Smooth At Ore. Track By N.A. WWlams CLACKAMAS, ORE. May 23, 1970 - A large number aE- riders turned out for this night's races and the races got started on time. There was a smaller turn-out of 500cc and Open class bikes this time but there were more 250Cc machines. The weather was better this week and there was a bigger SPectator turn-out. Several riders went down throughout the night, but no one was seriously injured. (Results on page 21) . overall. UnderhW took an early lead in the first moto and beld off Malcomounted Ricky Poulin all the way to the checkered flag. Mann flnlshed a close third. The second moto was all Poulins when UnderhW got off to a bad start and just couldn't make it uP. The third moto was another triumpb for the speedy UnderhW as he turned lap times equal to those of the 500 class. Near the flnlsh Duane Mann closed fast on Underhill and almost beat him to the checkered flag in a spectacular drag race that had the Greaves rider win with a Wbeelle by a few yards. MaIdng a clean sweep of the 500 class, C-Z-mounted Wayne Schuler showed plenty f1 class as be won every moto. Wlnnlng the drag to the first turn was the old pro, Monte DarllDg on a C-Z only to be quickly passed by Schuler. At the end f1 the first moto it was Schuler, Poulin, and Dave Ringel on a new Greaves Griffon. On the second moto MonteDarllDgwas again first to the turn but was soon passed by Wayne Schuler and Dick Poulin. On the last lap it looked llke Poulin mlgbt be able to take over but dropped way back when be ran into some kind of trouble and flnlshed slxtb. Darltng came 10 second this time ahead of BID Verm1lye on another C_Z. The third moto began much llke the others when Monte got his usual fantastic start. But .this time be beld it until the second lap when Stan Johnson on a C- Z got by, followed closely by Scbuler. Johnson managed to bold onto his lead over Schuler and was really moving well till the last lap-when be had some problems that dropped him all the way back to seventh. For the third straight time, Schuler came borne first with Monte DarllDg bot on his beels ahead of third place BID Stuth, another fine Northwest rider. (Results on page 22) CY~!1C1T 939-4988 2631 N. The Eddie Herrmann rooting section let out a big cbeer when this first year Amateur set the fast time for the night at 16:43. He was followed by two first year El\P8IiS, Len MWer at 16:62, and Jack Mott at 16: 65. The Novice Main looked llke it was going to be an easy win for Gary Kapus, when be took the lead off the line. The bard-charging Randy Scott got a bad scratch but showed the boys bow to get around the track as be sbot from 6th place' to 2nd in one big sWOOP. As be started to challenge Kapus for the lead, a couple of riders toward the back of the pack got crossed uP and both went into a bad crash on the flnlsb line.. The race was black-flagged so that riders and •machinery could be cleared off the track. The race was re-started with a staggered start. Kapus and Scott had a lap by lap duel for lst, until Kapus had some trouble with his shifting on the last lap, . giving Scott the opportunity be was walting for to grab the lead and take the cbeckered flag, in a 1-2 flnlsh, wh1ch was a repeat of their flnlsh in the Novice Main at the Pt. Townsend 1/2 mlle the Sunday before. The Amateur Main saw Chuck Joyner take the lead, followed by Herrmann and Darrel Cotton. At the 1/2 way point Herrmann sllpped under Chuck coming into the straightaway. There was a llttle knuckle banging and elbow rubbing with Herrmann coming out in front and Joyner rubbing uP aga1ns the fence. Eddie had his work cut out for him to maintain the lead, after be got Joyner riled uP, wh1ch made for a f1nlsh that had the crowd OIl its feet. The Expert Main event was a complete uPSet off the line, leaving the pre-race favorites, Mark WlWams and Sonny Burres, near the end of the pack. Jack Mott got a good scratch followed very closely by BID Jackson and Len MWer. With the two bot-shoes in the rear, it lIPpeared that suddenly Jimmie Smith decided that this was the time to make a bid for the 1st place - and worked his way from 4th to 1st, witb1n a 3 lap span. Meanwhile, Sonny Burres developed motor trouble and pulled into the pits. This gave Smith his 1st Main Event win of the year. He was all smiles after the races - this win, added to his previous Sunday's win at the Pt. Townsend 1/2 mlle, gave his morale - and walleta big boostl (Results on page 22) ~ r.J :i!:: r.J ...:J By JUdY Merryfield Dan Brecbt is the number one scram- U bles rider'in the Pacific northwest, as ::.. well as 11th in the nation in overall u points.
