MOTOCROSS J'UST AN ECHO AT ASCOTi By Eric Ratts GARDENA, CAL., May 31, 1970 - Like aD old maid aunt, Ascot Park got all dressed uP Sunday aDd then sat around trying to host a motocross with too few riders aDd a scarclt;r of spectators. Pete McCarroU, tb1s week's promoter, says he'U try It aga.1n In spite of the poor turnout. Some of the racing matched the feroc1t;r with which the spec.tators fought to get In; there' was muchpollte "Atter You, Alphonse." There were Instances of racing during the day, though; five 500cc SenIors put on perhaps the best show, stlcklng close together In an attempt by four two-strokes aga.1nst the BSA Victor Metlsse ridden suPerbly by Rich Thorwaldsen. Rich took the win oyer MIke RuDyard's Montesa. Runyard seemed to be riding at the llmtts of adhesion trying to catch the powder blue Metlsse. John Siebrandt steadied out a victory In the 500 Jr. class, putting his Greeves Grltton ahead of Ron Frescura's CZ. Frescura led the ,third mota wire-towire, keeping John at bay for ten laps. Mike Runyard took home a first place on his Montesa in the 250 Sr. class oyer his only competitor, Steve Ellsworth. The 250 Jr.'s were topPed by Ossa mounted Rick Brown followed by Doyle Mosley, Fred Wing, Gary Stokes, and Roger Flaming. Lloyd Qutntard took SenIor honors in the 125's wb1le road racer Tim Rockwood beat out the Juniors. He followed by two days his brother Tom's victory on the Ascot flat track. Bill Hosford, Ray Sloppy, Dave Carmichael and Steve Wrlgbt were runners-up in the 125 class. Mostly, It was a quiet day at Ascot. The flag boy at the lake seemed to be more interested in the tlora and fauna at the water's edge than the racing going on around him, and one ambulance attendant slept on the stretcher in the cool interior of the emergency vehicle. After the first two motocrosses at Ascot, Its reputation as a tough course spread to the East Coast. Now It 15 being made into llttle more than a scrambles track. Promoters are going crazy (and broke) trying to figure out what riders aDd fans want. The lure of no Sunday nlgbt trattlc to fight doesn't seem to be enough.
