By John Shedd & Ron Schnieders PEARBLOSSOM, CALIF. May 30-31, 1970 - At 6 am Saturday the f1rst of 500 riders left th1s high desert community to begin the grueling, 500 mUe, .1970 Annual Greenhorn Enduro. By dusk SIInday, fewer than forty percent of the entries would manage to pass the final check polnt of the West's longest, and somel1mes mostd1fflcult, deseri classic. I S1nce the Greenhorn 15 a tradit10nal event most top enduro rlders try to rlde It at least once. nus year there were riders from 15 states, lncluding New York, Delaware, Arkansas, and Alaska. Two of the more famous Eastern rlders present were John Penton and Leroy Winters. nus 15 Penton's f1rst shot at the Greenhorn, Winter'.s second. The weather for the run was as perfect as could reasonably be expected, with clear sides and temperatures not over 90. In past years, the beat bas elim1nated many riders, but few could clalm that excuse th1s year. Saturday's run of 216.7 mUes was not terribly d1ff1cult, but even so, only about 287 of the or1g1na1 riders were able to start the second half of the run on Sunday. Although relatively easy as enduros go, two hundred mUss cross-country 15 st1ll a long grind. It 15 commonly believed by many rlders that the Greenhorn 15 mostly dirt roads. nus IS not true; probably less than 10% of the run 15 composed of dirt roads but the traUs for the most part aren't overly d1ff1cult, nus 15 In keeping with the Pasadena MC's aim of maldng th1s an enduro for the average rider. The entry on Sunday was filled out with "Sunday Only" riders and five rlders were allowed OIl a number. Even so, there were some numbers with 0II1y one rider. Sunday mornlng's ride contained some d1ff1cult terrain and at least one rider was seriously hurt, reportedly (Continued on page 28) Two Husk)' rld.s tl)' the'r hand on some of the G....hom·s rock)' hills. .~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~ ~\VA· . ~ontt~a VlkI HOPE YOU GOT THE MESSAGE • DROP BY ANYTIME L.caster: , LARRY LILLEY MOTORCYCLE ,45345 NII'III Sierra Highway Ontane: DON'S CYCLE SALES 1108 West Holt (n3) H4-9n8 (805) 942-2221 San Pedro: COMPETITION SERVICE INC. 1244 North Gaffey (l14) 986-5002 (213) 541-2203 OraDge: ORANGE HONDA 2020 Ch_an Burtlank: ROEHR BROTHERS 311 North Victory Boulevard EI Monte: KAR CYCLE SHOP 10619 East Garvey (114) 633-1344 VeldUra: OMO & SON MOTORCYCLE SALES 480 NOl1II VeatlIftI Avellle (805) 643-1125 (n3) 842-4841 (n3) 443-5112 I.glewoo": SUZUKI CITY 128 Sod La Brea (213) 614-1431 Westminster: WESTMINSTER SPORT.CYCLE 1514 Westminster Avenue Redlan_s: HONDA OF REDLANDS 405 West Redlands BOUlevard Los Angeles: VALERIAN'S TWO CYCLE CITY 10613 Wesl Pico CU4) 893-1051 CU4) 193-2833 or 193-2834 (213l41H541 Hemet: HEMET CYCLE CENTER 100 lest Florida Ave. lIIinier: KAGAY'S USED CARS & MOBILE HOMES 13428 Telegraph Road CU4) 658-8062 (n3) 941-5012 La Mesa: B-N SUPPLY 1500 EI Cajon Boulevard Glendora: GEORGE DYE MOTORS 123 Easl Alosta CU4) 465-8321 (n3) 963-5463 sepulveda: WARREN WILSON MOTORS 9000 5epuIV!llla Boulevar4 ~., .
