!HARBOR DAYS TOUR IN OCEANSIDEli '" t.:I ~ By Bill Harmer Oceanside is famous for the giant Camp Pendleton Marine Corps installation and for its mlles of superb beaches. As Southern California motorcyclists converged uPton the city for the Thlrd Annual .running of the TRI-CITY M,C. "Harbor Days Tour", the highway billboards reca1Ied these facts to their minds. The red and gold Marine Corps signs were interspersed with broadsides that invited them to "Tan your hide in Oceanside" . The parking lot behind Sambo's Cafe on Mission BlVd. was packed with bikes of every descriPtion at an early hour on May 24th as their more than 200 owners milled about sipping hot coffee and renewing acquaintances. A poker card was drawn and a list of questions perta1n1ng to motorcycle laws and rules of safety was g1ven to each rider. Each question could be answered "True" or "False", and after you made your choice, you checked the map on the reverse side which had a "T" and "F" location for each question. If you answered the question correctly, you found a check point at that place. If you missed the question, you found nothlng. It was a lot of fun for the riders and at least one entire club made a wrong selection and were teased unmercifully by other tour members as the word spread throughout the run. The last checkPoint was in front of the HarleY' Davidson Shop and about a half Ii block from the Honda-BMW Dealer on "Motorcycle Row" • The street was blocked off and lanes' were limed down the center for the field events. High on a bluff directly above the competition area was the city park. The riders were directed there for a delicioUs barbecued chicken dinner complete with baked beans and potato salad. It is a large lawn covered and tree shadedpark and would make a wonderful campground for an overn1ghter if the club could arrange for its use. After lunch the field events and judging started. Among the trophy winners for hotly contested competitions were the Singing Wheels M,C, of San Diego for the best dressed. The San Diego BMW Owners for the largest M,C. present. In the under 750Cc slow race, Ken Ferguson of ,San Diego on a 4 cyllnder Honda tried hard and showed real skill, but had to settle for second prize when Jose Ysatin rode his BMW so slowly that he barely moved in a spectacular display of motorcycle control and balance. Don Hurst and Ken Plickerd, both on H-D 74's fought it out in the over 750Cc class with Don taking first trophy. The Hi Riders M.C, of CoVina won the long distance club trophy which indicates , that a lot of District 37 riders and clubs missed an exceptional1¥ fine run. - ~ t.:I ...:l U :... u it ~. A wide variety of styles and prices. And each manufacturer is as proud of his product as the next one. However, just as some people can play the piano better than others, so can some people build trailbikes better than others. The Hodaka 'B' is better. Some say, and we agree, it's the finest all-around trail machine on the market. Of course, we don't expect you to believe us just because we say so. You'd have to ride one of our Hodakas a few months before we could make a true believer out of you. .But maybe we can convince you of a few reasons why we should be able to build a better trailbike than anyone else. 1. In the first place, it's all we build. We specialize. You won't become a concert pianist trying to play every piece in the band. 2. We improve our product cinefully (the 100 'B' IS the result of over six years of such =reful study). No wild swings from one model change to the next. 3. We sell results, not promises. The Hodaka trailbike has for years proven to be the single most popular trailbike model sold in America. In fact, more Hodaka trailbikes are sold every year than any other single motorcycle produced, regard· less of size. This is just the .beginning. The happy ending occurs at your Hodaka dealership. Test ride one today. That's when we hope to make a true believer out of you.
