May 24, 1970 - The 125 odd riders and small turn out of . spectators didn't realiZe what a memorable day of racing they were In for as practice got under way. JIm WUson and Tim Hart renewed their battle for motocross supremacy, Tim was on his "Montesa, as his other machines were down for repair, and JIm was aboard his Nicholson prepared Greeves Griffon. went on to win on the super sllppery track. Bob moved UP fr om the back to !1n1sh well enough to take the class win, with Les second and Mike Horstman th1rd. The 500 junior class produced some excitement as no one could even manage two firsts. Gary McKenzie with a win In the third moto and consistancy In the other two came out on toP, whUe David Messer and Wally Gordon tied for second. Both had a good shot at first but were downed by a sUck clay surface while leading. Next week Ascot Motocross has a new promoter for the Sunday events, as Pete McCarroll promises money to all riders. This should draw a larger percentage of the local motocross riders trying to take top money. Ascot now offers two Motocrosses per week with the Thursday night CMC event and the new Sunday pro event. (Results on page 31) Hart dropped his chain In practice whlle chasing Wllson, thus putting him out for the day. But . promoter Bob BaUey doesn 't give uP a show Uke these two put on that easUy. Bob produced a Matco for Tim to ride,and the first moto found WUson in tront Hart while Gary Jones pushed his Yamaha to the Umit to closing third. As the three of them took the last lap !lag and began to close on a fellow rider to lap him WUson took to the Inside and Tim to the outside with Tim coming out on toP. Jim didn't appreciate the actions of this lapped rider and let him know about it In no uncertain terms. The second moto found Hart In the back with a poor start, as WUs on and Jones swapped for the lead. Hart began to pi ck r iders and closed fas ter with each lap, The band stand turn on the next to last lap f ound Jones to the inside, with WUson using the banked outside. Hart, some ten yards behind, came fiylng through the center, squared it off, taking the two of them In one giant move and goi ng on to win . Tim lead the third moto wire to wire as Wllson tried everything to get by. The Junior classes were split into two division for two motos, then ev eryone left after the two rode togethe r i n a third Mike Payse and Bob Brooks, both with two wins, had their go at it, with Brooks on top as Mike also had problems with slower riders. Young Tim Rockwood appUed the pressure In all motos, only to have bike problems every time. Bob Brooks didn't know at the time his riding f or the day was • to earn him the top overall rider for the four race series as Bob Whitlock didn't r i de due to an Injured l eg. Th e 250 junior s saw Bob Mess er carry two wins Into the th1r d m oto, but Les BrUey grabbed the l ead and a RON GRANT .
