The~ American Motocross Team' G MONTULCON, FRANCE, May 5, 1970We are in a camp ground right now and I am getting this letter off to you before we leave to continue our ' travels . We stayed here last night . Sunday (the firs t of May) we went to Vannes-St.-Nolf in France. On the way I blew a caravan tire and we had to search for a place in Lllle that had one, It was rough because It was a big holiday. Flnally licked that problem. We arrived at the track on Sat. at 2:00 in the afternoon. Nopractice until Sunday. So we set up camp and rechecked the bike. Sunday had twogoodpracttce sesstons, . The track Is laid out on two sides of a valley, The course goes up and down the sides of the hills, then crosses the valley floor to the other side to complete the circuit. Many rocks, a lot of dust, but a pretty neat course In all, Start system ls rubber band. ' In the first start I came off the line poorly. I was In very good rorm though and the track was very, very rough. Good for me though and my 5" travel Curnutt shocks. I worked my way up, charging hard all the time and I flnlshed fourth. Early Start For Benefit Tour By H.J. Eble I LeaVing the start the riders headed for the coast and accompanied the waves for a while until Topanga Canyon, where they were given a choice of staying with the sur! or heading for the high country. The beginners and unsure riders could proceed up the coast and join the rest of the group near Point Magu, The rest of the riders took off for the hllls up the canyon and over Mulholland Highway. It was a pleasure to get away from the usual smog, trafflc and congestion. With the early morning, the ominous cloud of polluted air was constctous by its absence and It made us feel that we were somewhere other than Southern CalUornla, The recent rains contributed to the lush greenery and clear air thatls not too often seen in this part of the country, It was with a twinge of sorrow that we though that eventually we had to go back to the urban ratrace. The tour route twisted along some other scenic roads and flnally wound its way to Rancho SanAntonio where the sign in was located along with the soda pop cooler provided by the Hl- Way Kings, There was a little wait after the deadline and the group stood by their machines while Father Freyburger gave the invocation and blessed the St. Chrtstopher medals, Then he went among the machines blessing each one and giving each individual one of the medals. , With the culmination of the blessing the club president John Ells presented Father Freyburger with the check for the proceeds from the run. The gold giving proceeded promptly and ended with the drawlngfor the Wixom fairing and an accompanying helmet from Casy's of Pacoima. The biggest attention getter of the day was the appearance of Ed " Big Daddy" Roth along with a couple of hts friends and their well know tr1kes complete with hairy V8 engines. For those who are doubters there were 221 entries thatcan testify that these unique machines can not only make 1t with ease but can make it with the troops as well as any two , cylinder. Even good 01' Charlie Brown was there coming in 475 miles from the Phoenix, Ariz, area and blowing his b1ke up at the border in the attempt, By Maureen Lee Well, the point has been proved that when enough people get mad enough and care enough to do something about it, laws can be changed. The AMA has rescinded its law against anyone under sixteen years old riding. Their executive committee held a speclal meeting and official in Sacramento, even a postcard carries some weight with it, I [you don't know who your elected offlcial Is, call me at home, I have a list of them all, Not wanting to sound too militant about it but after all, who ts the government? They can't do their job unless we let ' em know what we want, So scream! SANTA MONICA, CAL. May 3, 1970The day began bright and early for riders waiting to start the Hi WayKings Rancho San Antonio Boys Town Benefit tour, This tour also Included the 10th annual Motorcycle blesstng, It did not take long for the HI- Way Kings to put them ready for the road with a couple of cups of coffee and a onut or two compliments of Andrew Verrone. The start did not get overcrowded at any time and things went pretty smoothly. arou • GlAtJT 44t TROPH'~S for \-j fId '" 111 MbT04 tlas~s r~~: Simi Valley MC , Simi Valley Honda, RD Sports Cycle , Vamaha of T.O., Mark III 011 lCr C"EAM &eAKE 'DR ' ALLTHlUDS ~ ~~ ~EEll J.I FOR NOM &~!
