On the first try in the 500 Experts, three riders crashed on the switchback, the 2nd try wasn 't much better, and f1na1lY Ken Dalla (Honda) took the flag with Jay Grilli, BSA mounted, 2nd and brand new Expert Lee Seidel (Honda) riding to 3rd place. Gary Hilton, riding a BSA, in the 650 Novlce rode spectacularly to 1st place (he also won 250 Nov. Div. B). You can 't beat this type of hot performance. May 17, 1970A warm sunny day brought 82 riders to nearby Cycle HUls to compete in an English trials event put on by the San Jose chapter of Pacific International Trials Society. Competition was held in 12 sections, representing 4 classes, (Expert, Amateur, Novlce and Junlor), over a very difficult course. To give some examples, section 1 was an uphlll (about 45 degrees), S curve through the trees and vines, with a hard right just at the apex of the incllne back to the road. Only 12 riders received a "clean" here. Section 2 consisted of riding up a boulder-strewn stream for about 75 yards, including ducking under an overturned tree trunk, (after a bllnd corner), and then up an embankment. Each subsequent section appeared more dlfficult than the previous, ending with the granddaddy of them all, (section 12), a sheer drop of 40 feet down a hUl of 70 degrees into a stream, then a hard left turn downstream, followed quickly by a hard right up the embankment. Through this tortuous course, Richard Hood, Ossa-mounted, put in a superb effort scoring 28 •'cleans" (out of a possible 36), and getting only 28 points to take first in the Expert class. Close behind was Vic Boocock (Bultaco) with 29 "cleans" and 31 points. The Amateur class found Jim Persson twisting and turning his bright blue Cotton to a first with 24 "cleans" and 60 points, followed by Denny Quails on a Bultaco Sherpa with 1~ "cleans" and • 68 points. Novlce class brought out 64 riders battllng for the trophles, with Joe Eckels riding a non-trials Yamaha and taking first in his class, (125cc & under); Dave Mooney, also Yamaha-mounted, took hls trophy (126cc & over), with the trials bike novice class being won by John Salvin on a Bultaco. ' One of the guttiest performances of the day was put in by l1ttle Rick Bygdnes, age 11, aboard a speclally prepared Dallsman. Time and time, he ended up under hls bike, as he sUpped and fought on the same tough-going tackled by the Experts and Amateurs. Yet, each time, he scampered back to his feet and, more important, back to hls seatl He ended the day with 1000 points. May 10, 1970Over 50 riders turned out for the class "C" scrambles at Carnegie Cycle Park for 15 races, 8 laps in the qualifying events and 12 lap heats in the Mains. The course was about 1/2 mile long with 2 rights, 2 lefts, a jump, and a long straight. The races were A.M.A . sanctioned and sponsored by the H11ltoppers M/C of San Lorenzo, who dld an excellent job of running the event. , One of the most e.xciting race of the day was between J. Brooks and K. Godfree in the 650 Am/Ex. go. Both were neck and neck the entire 12 laps, with the lead changing' 5 times. Brooks flnally won by a bike length. The turnout was good despite winds and an A.M.A. race in nearby Fremont. John Gennal, John Green,' Scott Brelsford, and Al Kenyon, were all hot on Foley's wheels throughout. Brelsford was the first man through the first turn and appeared to have it all sewed up until he missed a gear coming out onto the straightaway. That mistake cost hlm two spots. John Green then got by putting h1m in fourth Ron Smith survived to take 250cc Novice honors in front of 49 entries. Bob Digges, easilY outdlstanced heat winner Mike Tracy, in the 125 Novlce Steve Hernandez was having a fairly easy time in the 200 Amateur Main until hls carburetor was displaced and sidelined him . Pat Brown then took over first The 650 Expert Main was a thr1ller as Tiffen Mullenax led it off only to get wide in the first turn and have Phil Ray get underneath. Mullenax must have been having handling problems as on the next lap, he went out into the tulles. Wheeler Gresham took over second and really gave Ray a bad time but Gresham couldn't get by. The new track, while slightly smaller, is just as fast and with a little widening will be an excellent scrambles course. This particular race was merely a shakedown, 348 riders showed to shake it down, and the official grand opening w1l1 be on Sunday, May 24th.
