KRING NEW 500 LEADER Sweden's Arne Kring, it was reported In the English weekly Motor Cycle News , snatched the lead in the 500cc world motocross championship on Sunday with the epic rides through rain and mud In France. This was the fourth round of the World 500 Championship. But the Maico threat to Husqvarna's lead loomed ever closer as Adolf Well slithered his 390cc machine to second place overall. It was Malco's best performance in two years of serious competition in the 500cc class, and on this form the West German factor y could win a grand prix any weekend now. Of the two world champions In the race, " ex-500 king Paul Friedrichs stopped In the first race when water got into the carburetor of his 400 CZ• . And reigning champion Bengt Aberg tumbled , from the lead at this year's series during a dramatic second leg. He crashed - forcing Vic Allen into the straw bales - when holding fifth place. With his hands covered In grease as a result of the spill, he fciund difficulty in restarting his Husqvarna, and got back into the race a long way behind the leaders. Twice his chain jumped the sprocket. But using the reserves of guts that the Swedes possess In abundance, he plodded on to finish 15th - and eighth overall. He was not troubled by the hand injury that stopped him in Holland the previous week. _ "The 1-1/4 mlle : circult at Vesoul formed a difficult test for the 30 starters. It scooped and soared like a coaster and included a dozen jumps that confused r iders. To add to the variety, a couple of the gradients had cobblestone surfaces. " Unbeli evable," was Vic Allan's verdit. As s o often before, the 44 bhp Maicos out-dragged the pack Into the first turn. But Ake Jonss on' s race ended after only one lap when he hit a bale knocked onto ~ the track by Kring 'S "machine. ~ Kring , a brllliant r ider In the wet, ~ forced on to a 23-second win , with Well r.:I holding back the remaining works Husq- ~ varnas 'of Chris Hammargren, Aberg :;:: and Jef Teu wissen. U Teuwissen led the second leg until the last lap , when he fell and allowed Kring to pinch first spo t. But the 29-year-old Belgian, who has s cored in all four grand prix held this year, remounted to finish third overall, and now holds second place In the championship table, only ,six points behin d Kring. !Andrews Takes Stot'ish Six Daysl EI Toro Rough And Muddy Mick Andrews won last week's Scottish Six Day Trail for the first tim e In his Career 'on a 250cc Ossa. The win for Andrews was overdue as he has bee n runner-up three times in the last nine years it was reported In the English weekly Motor Cycle News. . It was a close match all the way with Rob Edwards, Sammy Miller and Malcolm Rathmell all in contention to the end. Rob Edwards (Montesa), one of the four aces who held number one sport during the week, snatched second place from Sam my Miller (Bultaco) on Saturday'S final stage. Malcolm Rathmell (Bultaco) was fourth-ten marks behind the winner. Initial leader Miller was the only ace who lost no marks on time, but the battle for supremacy was close throughout the week. Final scores were: Andrews 26, Edwards 31, Miller 34, Rathmell 36. Though not represented in the big manufacturers' team contest, In which Montesa defeated Bultaco' the new Ossa behaved perfectly. ' Spanish machines dominated the event, held In perfect weather until Saturday's final stage. Geoff Chandler (Bultaco) was fifth. John Hemingway (Suzuki) was rr-the best 125. 17 year old Gerald Rathmell (Sprite) was the best newcomer. Third on two previous occasions, 25year-old Andrews said: " I was choked pj ~ , 1/ (imichrome ~'~ -/Shines Suddenly , ~ ~,rc SImlchrome Is a honey 11: , ' when I lost six marks on time on Wednesday. On ThurSday I knew I was near enough to win. ' On Fr iday I got the lead I wanted." He added : " I tried to keep my mind off the marks I had lost I deliberately avoid ed looking at the · s coreboard." Five times winner Miller, whose relegation to third was a repetition of last year's Highland fli ng, held a slight ad- _ vantage on the first and fourth ·day. To his sorrow his team 's defeat was witnes s ed by Buitaco boss Francesco Bulto who flew fr om Spain to watch for the first time. Thanks to Edwards, Gordon Farley (Bth) and Lawrence TellIng, Montesa took the manufacturers team prize. It was a war of nerves in the best Scottish tradition. And with more at stake than most, MUler cracked under the strain. The final drama took place at P ipe Line, near Kinlochleven, where Miller went to pieces and Edwards snatched second spot. In keeping with the Spanish domination of the BOO-mile event the weather was almost Mediterranear:. Few could recall a sunnier Scottish. Before they got a soaking on the return trip from Fort W1ll1am to Edinburgh, mos t of the 142 finishers (210 starters) sported a healthy sun-tan. eCI • ..,s quick as a bunny OMPETITION Tube $1 CHEMICALS Can $3.50 70 4 W a ihlng ~on A~e •.
