WEEK'S SPEEDWAY ACTION ~ ~ u Woods takes 3 Out Of 3 G Scratch Mains By M1ke Capalite COSTA M ESA, May 15 - A capac1ty crowd turned out again at the Orange County F alrgrounds F r 1day nlgbt to see Sonny Nutter and R1ck Woods w1n the Malo Events 10 class1c speedway style. nus was r eally a nlght f or the spec tators as the crashes were f requent, but l ucidly there were no Injuries, I n his usual broadsliding fashion, Rick had overcome his 60- yard handicap 10 his heat race and won it. But in the semi, as the riders blasted into the f i r st corner, J1m Gresham and Greg Haserot went down, Greg was able to continue through. W1th one lap to go, it was Bruce Haser ot leading with Bill Cody in second as they went loto the last lap, Woods was passing Cody on the outs1de 10 the corner when suddenly there was Greg Haserot's machine Iying 10 the track wher e he had fallen again. Th e machine was lying right in front of R1ck. With no place to go, Woods pulled the front wheel up in the alr while 10 a tun l ock slide to try and clear the machine, but when the rear wheel hit it, it knocked the machine out f r om under R1ck and he went down. The 2nd div1510n Malo Eve nt was all Joe F1tzpatr1cks as he stayed ahead of the pack to repeat h1s performance 10 the heat race as he took the checkered flag ahead of Garry Fl5hburn and Bruce F lander s . Sonny Nutter , last year' s State Champion was the big hero for the Great Bear Racing team as he stormed fr om his 50yard handicap to take the w1n 10 the Handicap Malo Event. Off the Une, Sonny got the jump on Bill Cody of the USA Rac1ng T eam who started on the 40-yard Une and as Sonny worked his way up through the pack , Cody was right behind him. W1th one lap to go, Nutter took the lead away f r om John F l5 hburn and Bill wasn ' t able to f ollow through and had to . settle for a third behind F l5hburn. Placlog flrst in his heat and the semi, last year's U.S. Champion Rick Woods kept his string gol ng in the Scratch Malo as he outdistanced the rest of the pack by a good marglo to take his thlrd straight scratch Malo Even t w1n at the Costa Mesa oval. May 17 - Hav1ng .ridden his flrst SPeedway race the nlght before at Bakersfleld, Jimmy Raymond journeyed to the Antelope County Falrgrounds Sunday in hopes of getting a chance to ride even though he was not on the program. J1mmy, who 1s a constant winner ' at South Gate Raceway in TT and Short Track, was lucky enough to get loto a handicap heat as an alternate. By virtue of being a new rider , Ray mond was not given any handicap, but started on the scratch Une which 10 1tself 15 a big help, Raymond k ept ahead of the pac k while r 1d1og in a somewhat unorthodox style f or speed way, whereby he remaloed standing up on the peg all the way down the straightaway. Raymond came back in the Semi and the Handicap Malo to do the same thing. May 16, 1970 The thlrd race m eet of the 1970 Bakersfield Speedway season was run Saturday night under ideal conditions, 90 degree weather and enthusiastic fans. The show got off with a big ban, as Terry Graham f ound no room for himself in turn one. There was a big pUeup, but no one was hurt and the race was P.cific Co.st HOld. The 22nd event of the evenlng, the Handicap Malo Event, went to R1ck WoodS, as it has f or the last two weeks . Start1ng from the 50 yard Une, Rick had to overtake the rest of the field. Sitt1ng beside Rick on the 50 yard Une was the only man to beat him earlier in the even1ng, Sonny Nutter . It wasn 't to happen twice in' the same nlght. The flrst lap advantage went to Bruce Flanders, who started on the zero handicap Une. A s F lander s lost ground, it was quickl y recovered by Larry Shaw and Norm Elledge. Th e two went into the last lap, with Norm hol ding a commanding lead, f ollowed by Greg Has erot and Larry Shaw. ~s L arry and Greg battled f or second and third, they again went wide. Rick saw the hole and f1lIed it. He passed them and could see Norm going loto the last turn. Rick pitched his bike loto the turn, just a few feet behind Norm, pull1ng alongs1de in the corner. Now it was a drag race to the flnish Une, with R1ck gett1ng the checker flag for the flna1 event of the evening. As the race progressed; Rick moved up to second spot behind Sonny and was pushing for the lead but Sonny was r1ding for all the glory of the Great Bear Team and kept taking Rick's Une through the corner. Comlog out of the last corner for the checkered flag, Nutter went a little hard and drifted just enough to let woods get underneath him and as they both accelerated for the finlsh, it wasanybody' s race as the crowd was on its feet and cheering as Woods pulled off the w1n by a matter of mere Inches, $49.95 Oea I..
