If I tell you what to say and where to send it, will you take the time to sit down and write two letters which may very well save the ille of a motor cycllst? Possibly the lite . of a fa mily member or fr iend ? There are three proposed laws being considered by our state legislators at this very moment. All three pertain to trespass : I~ tant second, and Doug Hannan on a Bultaco, who earller had visions of second place, foun d himself In third. Tom White aboard a Bultaco still s porting battle scars from a bad s pill at P er r is a wee k ago, surprised the r ace fans as he s wept by Mateo mounted Jim Stein on the last lap to cla1m victory In the 250 TT Sr. Main. Prohibits the use of cables, wires, ropes, to block pathways, traUs, raodways or obvious entrances and exits to the existing laws work for us. THIS 15 ' OUR OPPORTUNITY TO RID OURSELVES OF THE 'CABLE MENACE'. Need I say more? Address one letter to your Assemblyman and the other to your Seantor*. Use your own words or copy these: " As my elected representative, I want you to ensure that AB 996, AB 1458, and SB 551 all contain a prohibition of the use of cables, wires, and ropes as barriers to roadways, paths, trails, and natural entrances to land . If a piece of land Is so If you have not already done so, tell your elected representatives that you oppose the fee Increase from $5.00 to $15.00 for Certificates 'of Ownerships as contained In SB 527. While you are writingyourletters,You may wish to inform your representatives that as a motorcyclist, you have a lobbyIst In Sacramento who is keeping you informed on motorcycle legislation and how they, your elected r epresentatives, vote on all motorcycling issues. Re mind . hi m that your lobbyist is speaking for m~o~·r~.~ Irom Ibe oapRol - AB 996 makes it trespass to ente r cultivated, fe nced, or pos ted land without written permission of owner, his agent, or per son In lawful possession, rather than making s uch entry a trespass only if accompanied by other spec1f1ed act. -SB 551 make s it a trespass to enter, loiter, sleep, hike, camp, hunt , fis h, or otherwise occupy, or to park upon, or ride any vehi cle, or other conveyance upon lan d, real pr oper ty , or structures belonging to or la wtu11y occupied by another and not open to the general public without the consent of the owner. - AB 1458 prohibits a person from driving a motor vehicle on s pecified roadways located on spec1f1ed levees or cwnal banks. AB 996 was heard by the 'As se mbly Crlm1nal Procedures Committee on May 6, 1970. At my request, Assemblyman Chappie and the Committee have agreed to consider two additions to AB 996. Briefly, these additions are: 1. "Persons purporting ' to be the la wtul * SACH S PENTON Walt Axthelm's Triumph-Suzuki Motors and from private and public lands. Requires well-Identified gates capable of being easUy seen fr om a distance of 100 yards during dayl1ght hours and 200 feet during hours of darkness. If the gate is erected In a location v.ilereln it is impossible to be observed from the se distances, then appropriate warning signs are to be Introduced at the stated distances.Any person or the director of any agency which blocks a trail, pathway, roadway, or natural entrance to private or public land with a cable, wire, rope, 'etc , wUl be guUty of a misdemeanor and subject to felony impr is onment in the event of Injury or death to any person resulting from the presence of such cable, wire, rope, etc. I have requested the authors to lnclude Items 1 and 2 (Immediately above) with SB 551 and Item 2 with AB 1458. Even though a few of you who read this may lntttally object to any laws on trespass, just remember that the trespass laws are already statutes on the books. These three Bills merely tighten the controls to protect the lawful and righttul landholder. I am proposing that we make valuable that it warrants protection at the risk of a human ille, then it warrants protection with a well-identified gate. " Als o, AB 996 and AB 1458 must provid e recourse against person who falsely identify themselves as lawtullandholders and In this pretended capacity, for c e others fr om public lands." All three of these Bills wUl be heard ve ry soon. AB 996 wUl be heard again on May 20, 1970. Time is very short! You can be assured that we wUl meet strong opposition by those wno wUl be required to r eplace cables with gates. We outnumber theml It aU depends whether you wr ite your letters, or not!
