NA TLPOINTS SHUFFLED Loudon National Steeped In ·Tradition On June 14, 1970, thousands of spectators w1ll Invad e Bryar Motorsport Park, L eudon, N.H., for the 49th annual runnIng of New England' s only motorcycle road race - The Laconia 100 mUe National. The race is as traditional as the countryslde that surr ounds it. At one time, the event was he ld at Keene Fairgrounds track but In 1940 it was moved to Laeonia, N.H. For nearly a quarter of a century, race fans flocked to the weeklong motor cycle fest, highlighted by colorful parades, tours, dances, and beauty contests. But, as traditions are changed by the Umes, so was the Laconia event. In 1965, the race was switched to its present 10- caUon In Loudon, N.H., and the weeklong activities were shaved to a weekend meet. The entry llst w1ll certalnly contaIn the names of two past wlnners _ CalvIn Rayborn (' 68) and Gary Nixon (' 67). Last year, the event was won by the late Fr ed Nix . Cal Rayborn, SprIng Valley, Calif., Is considered by many to be the best road racer In the U.S. During the ' 69 season, Rayborn won road races at Daytona, Indianapolis, and Heidelberg. So far this year, CalvIn's wlnnlng style has been hampered by mechanical difficulties and he w1ll be lookIng for his firs t 1970 National wtn, Rayborn rides for Harley-. Davidson. It's Cherry Creek Time Again May 17, 1970 w1ll see the 10th Annual runnIng of the Cherry Creek Hare'n HOUnd. This race has been described by most leading cycle publlcations as the toughest, most enjoyable Cross Country Race held In the United States. Al Rogers of California continues 'to be the favorite to wIn agaIn In 1970. Challenging his string of wins is Dick F ish and his Canadians agaIn th1s year, plus a huge array of California and other State's best rider s . This year " Cherry Creek" w1ll be a Wes ter n States Championship and is A. M.A. sanctioned plus sanctioned by the S.R .A. Inte r mountaIn Rlders Organization. The course w1ll be mostly new thts year, tak1ng In a complete variety ot terrain, It w1ll travel the Nor th Mountains ridges on one loop, the desert edge and side canyons plus cedar tree for es t on the second loop and the llttle Sahara Sand Dunes area and wes t hill and canyon area on the third loop. Along with the helP received every yea r from the Juab County Sheriff's Posse, the IntermountaIn Ambulance Service w1ll also be present. The course has.been laid out with 125, 175 and 360cc machines so any bike can t lnis h the entire three loops. Sign UP will open for Post Entries a t 3:00 p.m, to 6:00 p.m, Saturday May 16, 1970 and again Sunday, May 17, 1970 at 7:00 a.m, to 9:00 a.m, and the race w1ll be launched at 10:00 a.m, sharp. Gary, the 1969 AMA Grand Na ti onal Champion, Is ' always a top road r ace contender• Another pair of r iders to keep an eye on w1ll be Dick Mann, Richmond, Calif., and Gene Romero, San Luis Obispo, Calif. Mann is the present AMA poInt leader and Romero is In contention. A wln for either rider would certainly boost his position In the ratings. Already th1s year, Mann has displayed his wlnnlng style by grabbIng top honors at the Daytona 200. Romero flnished second In that race. Loudon still has one remaIning tradition that has never changed - the event has always been won by a four-stroke machine I But don't mention that fa ct to Suzuki team r iders Ron Grant, Art Baumann and Jody Nicholas. Grant, who only enters road race Nationals, scored a big wln at the 125 mile Road Race at Kent, Wash. Yamaha mounted Yvon Duhamel, Canada's top road race star, w1ll also be out to upset the " Reign of t!le 4Stroke EngIne." All In all, the Loudo n event promises to be one of the season's most actionpacked events.
