May 10,1970- Everything went just right for Rich Tho rwaldson at the Red Dot's Hare Scrambles Sunday, as he took the lead ' away from J .N. Roberts - who developed gear box trouble - and went to win the two loop, seventy mile eve nt In a little more than an hour and a hal!. Brian Kloc k was the first Novice to comple te the two loops, finishing In the twenties, over the tough, wind bloWn course. " 1 got seared on the top ot those r idges" Klock said later . " The wind was blowing r ider s otf, so I kept my tront FOR. RICH- wheel down and out ot the wind and stayed on" . Alter the start, all the riilers hit the smoke bomb, with J.N. Roberts in the lead, followed by Steve Kirk and Thorwaldson. There were a lot ot wild jump s and hand stands in the ditch just alter the bomb, but everyone seemed to be able to ride it out and keep going. At least twenty club members were a t the first check, about four miles out, but It still got crowded. Thorwaldson had a good lead coming into the pits, with Gene Cannady on a Sachs running third followed bY Steve K1rk on ' his Montesa. Cannady was second and Kirk was third, while the fast young Amateur, Ron Wilson, pulled In fourth on his Husky to claim first Amateur. The 100Cc started ten min utes alter the big bikes, and Ken Buckspan, on a Hodaka, had the le ad, followed by Jetf Wright on a Rickman. Buckspan broke down four miles out, and Wright took over , with Jack Morgan, on a Hodaka, and Terry Clark #2 on the HarleyDavidson clos e behind. Morgan took over the lead and held It through the pits, with Clark second• . Wright was third but pulled into the pits with a-tlat r ear tire. YoungScotlHaislip, a Novice, was r unning very well at this point In the race. Moegan held the le ad and took the win. Clark had to drop out, and Hodakamounted Mitch Mayes took second. Jack Froelich was third on a Bultaco, while Paul Nyland was the first Amateur and Scott Haisli p kept going strong and took first Novice for his first tim e In six months ot riding. Acting on information furnished by the head s cor er , AMA Reter ee Dave Welsh ruled against Rice's protest on Apr il 5, 1970, the clay ot the race. A close study ot the records by the Appeal Board r evealed a mistake was made by the scor er In tab ulatin g the res ul ts . The revised res ults changed positioning from ninth place down, Including moving Rice fr om 17th to 13th place.
