May 2, 1970 - The Hayward M.C . opened their Saturday night scrambles season tonight with warm weather, clear skies, and only a bit of that notorious Hayward Speedway win. The stands, . ground, and walkways wer e so crammed you could hardly move. Quite a few people arrived, saw the . crowd and left, unwUllng to sit on the ground. The number of riders on hand for this , opener was .sensatt onal, as the 250 Nov. division alone had 85 r iders. In that clas s Paul Warne 's Bultaco was the fastest · bike around. Once off the start he stayed in front and slowly widened the gap between he and Gary Hylton (Bul) and Larry Neff (Ossa). The firs t heat of the 250 Novice was started 5 times and each time bikes clashed and riders unloaded in the first corner. No wonder the 650 Expert Main and last race got over after 1 a.m, Sunday morning. In 250 Amateur class, Dorian Jewett on a Bultaco snatched up first place with Pat Eagen, also Bul mounted, second. , Jewett also rode to second place in the 350 Amateur on a Honda behind John . The 250 ' Experts put on one whale of a show, as Les Costanza (Ossa) led the heat but crashed with another rider on the first turn of the Main. After that his bike was out, and John Genna! (BuI,) got off the l1ne best in the Main and led to the last lap when John Hlebo (Yam) just shut his eyes and turned the throttle wide open. Hlebo won by a wheel in front of Gennai, with Scott Brelsford hot on their heels . Black plate Dlstr1ct #1 Jim Foley and #6 John Green both (Bul) rode to 5th and 6th place. , Rick Hocking on a Hodaka buzzed to the winner ' s circle in the 100 Novice. Bultaco-mounted Steve Foster (the CMC 125 Jr. star) rode to top honors in the 125 Novic e class, whUe Wade Ulrich (Honda) ate the cake and got the kiss from the trophy girl in the 175 Novice class. ' Yamaha won the 200 Novice under Marly Webster's guidance, whUe Bultaco rider Ivan Shlgemasa rode hand to capture the Amateur class. Triumph mounted Mike Saranclria and Bob Henwood placed first in the 650 Novice and Amateur classes respectively, but Expert 650 rider Jim Brooks took his hardearned tropby' on a BSA (Results on page 19) Hall (Honda). Voice Of Tie Nor'. The following is an excerpt of a letter ment to the A.M.A.'s Worthington, Ohio office. 'The purpose of this letter is to dra ~ your attention to a situation we feel 15in ~e need of immediate surveUlance anc improvement. Spec1f1cally, we refer tc the short track races held in Vallejo, California (Dlst. 36) on Aprll 24, 1970 To the best of our knowledge, promoter J .C. Agajanlan was so distraught by thl second rate organization and control OJ the races, that he' was heard to say hE will never promote another race il Northern California again except fOI a National. The program was . in our opinion, second rate, disorganized and sloppy. 1 this organization known as'the A.M.A. cannot supply competent officiating to the point of providing aprofesslonal type program, then this up and coming spectator and rider sport will soon be dowr and going. We feel that Mr. Masterson (mst. 36 Referee) 15trying to do his best, but his efforts are stymied by a totally , incompetent staff of assistants, stewards etc., etc. Please take not of our state of alarm. HelP us make D15t. 36 the best place anywhere, for professional racing. Our district puts out far beyond an average share of the excellent rtders who make pro 'racing worthwhUe . Give them the respect of professional offlc1a1s. Boocock Tops At Pits Meet By Lyn Lyon COLFAX, CALIF . AprU 26, 19:70- Victor Boocock was in top form at the P.I. T .S. Red Dog Tr1als, held in the nearby Bear RIver area, losing only four points in four laps of the eight section course and taking the Expert class. lntermlttant rain, hall and sleet, as well as numerous river crossings, did nothing to dampen the spirits of the 70 plus riders. The ride between sections was enjoyable, and the s ections were interesting. Most of the sections were more trIcky than difficult, with section seven being the exception - ll_was a real bear, and most of the competitors lost more than one five on its rocks and cross-camber traverses. Following Boocock in the Expert class was Richard Hood with 15 points lost, and Lane Levett with 32 in the minus column. Fifteen year old Robert Tyson took the Amateur honors with 27 points lost, f1n1shlng third over-all, whUeArlie Welb and Dean Manley held down second and third. RAY ABRAMS Redwood CIty, Cal.
