U Rolllng h1lls and high speed jumps made the two mile course very fas t and snow fences let the crowd get close to the action with out wandering out on the track. The LaFay ette layout was in the same area as last year's Inter-Am but used . a different course . The classes got to run three 20 minute motos so there was lots of racing for everyone. Some of the best local talent was away shooting movies in New Mexico but Husky r i ding Whitey did in the 500cc Seniors and was ably backed up by Callf ornian Mark Blackwell. Blackwell liked to hit the big ju mp wide open and his Husky was airborne for most of the race. George Shaw got his Husqvarna into third to make it three Huskies before the fourth place CZ of Pet er Swift. New Mexico's Gene Durham walked away with the 250 Sr. cash by blasting his Mont esa ahead or CZ r iders Jim Wi cks and Bruce Baron. Bruce Sass, a Boulder, Col o. rider, picked off the 125 class with his Pento n. Bob Conway and Callfornla's rambling ambassador Gary Bailey wer e second and third. Local boy John Meyer of Englewood, Colo. put It to the 500cc B riders and Rick Norris won the 250 B event with a MontesI.. Michael Cates, Commerce City, Colo. caused a litUe excitement when be lost it in the first turn of lap one. The rest of the tightly bunched 125' s had trouble getting around Cates and when the dust cleared ' there were two other bikes down. Cates was the only one not able to continued. He was taken to the hospital, . where it was believed his injury was limited to a bruised hiP. At the tlnlsh of the B race, Yamaha rider Bob Falken and Colbert Pepper were l1rst and second in front of Penton r ider Gary Chase. At the end of the day a three lap sprint holllgan for .$50 was won by Gary Bailey 00 hts 380 Greeves Grlffon. (Results on page 19) . e, Mark Blackwell shoots lor tblsky with his Husky. April 29, 1970 - The motorcycle races at Orange County ofllcially started tonight and for the rest of the season the com bination of short track and TT racing w1ll be the regular program for the 125cc, 25Occ, and 500cc through open classes. The Srs. in the 250 TT class were led around the track by Jim Stein mounted on a Matco, followed by Peterson on a Ossa and WUI<1nson on a Bultaco, Larry Shaw, on a speedway style Bultaco, jumped to the lead in the 250 Sr. short track only to lose it on the second with Stein and took over first to fln1sh it. Peterson on an Ossa was third and Dueiti mounted Cruz was fourth. Jim Raymond won the Main Event in the 500cc lhru open Tl' combined class on a Montesa, followed by McNab on a BSA, with Matco mounted Tidwell a close third. Also taking the win in the 500cc thru open short track was Jim Raymond on a MontesI.. Tidwell on a Maico was a distant second and Ray Vanderpool aboard a M ontesa was third.
