AprU 26The luck changed for Rich Thorwaldson today, as he picked up a big desert win, after losing the lead last week as the result of a flat tire and a wrong turn. But today. everything went just right. "1 saw the two leaders take the wrong turn as 1 came over the hUl, and 1 grabbed the lead. The Rickman had lots of torque and 11 flattens out the rough bumps," Thorwaldson said after the race. After the banner dropped, the big bike riders headed for the smoke four mUes out. Steve KIrk had the lead on his Montesa, and Tom Center on a Triumph was second. The first loop was fast, with the leaders running the thirty five mUes In less than an hour. Ross WUson on a Husky and KIrk were out In the lead, with Rich Thorwaldson close behind as they came through the gas check. The second loop was slower, as It had U) an up hUl that had a couple of turns and ~ a lot of rocks . :c: Thorwaldson took the lead after the r.:l two leaders missed a turn. Then KIrk ...:l was able to get by Thorwaldson, and as U they battled 11 out wheel to wheel, KIrk got off In a rocky sandwash, KIrk was was second on the Montesa, MIke Patrick was third on the 250 Yamaha, followed by . Gary Preston on a 250 Bultaco, Tom Muto was next and Eric Jensen pulled In next on his 125cc Sach's. Jeff Wright. on a Rickman. led the lOOcc class to the smoke, but Jack Morgan led the race Into the pits, and had a minute lead over Wright. Mitch Mayes and Jim Sommers, both on Hodakas, were close behind . A good battle developed for second place, as Wright ran Into trouble and Mayes and Sommers went by.
