The time trials them selves were a point of cons ter nati on, as previous shor t tracks had been of the pr ogress ive heat variety. But a new rule now requires time trials, thereby eliminating two-third of the riders. This rule change confused the officials e nough so that thin gs neither ran smooth. ly, nor on time. April 19, 1970 - The racing season here got off to a fast, sunny start Sunday, when the Lodi M.C. held its first scrambles of the year • At noon the 100cc Novices ran the first of the day's 49 events. Rubber-band starts , s omething new at the Cycl e Bowl track, were prompt and fair. In the 125 Novice class , the final was a Yamaha r ace between Tim Culver and Chris Hoffman. Culver took first, despite Hoffman 'S best efforts. The 20Occ's were another story: a ba ck-and-forth match which left Warren Smith barely out fr ont of James Enfant. Both rode Bultacos. A wild, fast race in the 250 Novice class put Yamaha pilot Pat McCa ul in front of Don W1lUs and Marty Lewis. W 1lUs , the early leader, had Lewis in his shadow unW a hairpin foul- up let McCa ul get into the contest. He seemed content to stay out of their way - out front. The Amateur classes were anchored by Kim Jorgensen aboard a l OOcc Kawasaki. . In the 200cc finals, Sonny Kenyon suffered a hard fall in the firs t tunr , but was soon up and finished the race.
