AeA Road Racers Get Down To It At Anzac By Bruce U was a cool and windy day in Palmdale tb1s last Sunday but it did not hamper the flne meet that was held at Anzac Raceway, home of the Amer ican Cycle Association. A good turnout of bikes and riders turned out and they proceeded 10 get down 10 som e close competition. Practice didn' t quite get started as scheduled but it seemed everyone was able 10 get in enough practice 10 be satlsfled. Heat races then foll owed for all classes. The 100cc to 200cc Lightweight Pr oduction was first off In the Main Events . Jim Evans, aboard a l00cc Yamaha look his class . Tim Rockwood won the 125cc class and Pat Evans was the vic tor in the 200cc category, both were also Yamaha mounted . Next up was the 250Cc Open Juni or Grand P rix. Juniors are those who are new 10 r oad racing. This Is a very wis e Idea as it gives the rider a chance 10 race against others whose sldlls are more closely matched. It also makes it easier for those getting started in r acing 10 break inlo the sport. Dale Larson won Braly the open class, Richard Poole won the 500Cc categor y and John KWmann took the 35OCc, all were r1d1ng Hondas, The Lightweight Grand Prix was the next race and it was Ron Pierce on a 125cc Yamaha all the way. He grabbed the lead right off and lengthened it from then on. Chris Anderson was the 50cc viclory on an Ital Jet. Don Emde, aboard a Hodaka, won the 100cc class. The 175cc was captured by Honda rider Colin Jones and Charles Van Breeman won the 200cc class on a Suzuld. In the 25Occ-Open Pr oducti on race George Ker ker and Jerry Gr ee ne ran one- two for most of the race. These two pull ed far away fr om the r est ofthe fleld during their duel that finalIy ended on the next 10 last lap when Jerry los t it at the far end of the straight and fe ll, but he was unhurt and the bike only suffered a broken foot peg. This turned out 10 be a good break for Kerker as it was bout this time that his engine began 10misf ire because of some electrical malfunction. Pat Evans and Geoff Mazon, both on I'uzulds had a real nip and tuck battle going the whole race with Pat finally Looking ahead atthe ACA Road Race, near Palmdale, California. ,:m:::Jl1~:.I"-~ ;._ '" Charles Van Breenen (Suz), winner of the 200cc Sr. Grand Prix class , leads Elliot (89) Andrews (Yam) and Steve (99) Froschover (Yam) around an Anzac Raceway turn. coming out on lop in the 250cc class. James Randolph look the 350Ccclass win on a Suzuk1 and Jack Harney, riding a Kawasald Three won the 500cc class. Richard Reynosa, on a Yamaha, won the l00cc class in the 100cc-20OCc Junior Grand Prix and Dennis Dr umm took the 200cc class on the sam e make. Pat Hynan won the 350cc category on a Yamaha in the combined 25OCc-35OCc Grand Prix. In the 250cc class Steve Mallonee was the victor, also on a Yamaha. The Open Grand Prix saw another great battle for first. John McGillivray, on a Manx framed 750 Norlon diced with number 93, a new Kawasald HI-R roadracer, for mos t of the race. The Kawasaid set a new course lap record in the process. This duel was abruptly ended when the Kawasald r ider went down in a big way on the sweeper leading onlo the main straight. In the 500cc class Jack Harvey won en his road model Kawasald.
