AprU 9, 1970 - Dave Aldana devastated the Ascot bunch. He dJd it so convincingly that when it was all over, he was the unchallengeable winner by a whopping straJghtaway length. Brelsford was the logical choice for the win by virtue of his Trophy Dash win over Aldana, Mulder and fast Amateur, Tad Sloan, but logic is dangerous at Ascot. Dusty Coppage led into the first turn of the Maln with Van Leeuwen tuning in behind him; Dave Aldana made bls lnlt1al bid for first place in the first turn and tried to pass them both but was relegated to third momentarily. EddJe Mulder and Brelsford were the next twointo the turn, Brelsford suffered from an apparentloss of low'gear at the start. At the back field exit it was the Skipper, Coppage, Aldana, Mulder and Brelsford. Coming onto the front straight Aldana got by Coppage, then Brelsford and Coppage passed each other twice in fifty feet. It went that way for three laps but Aldana perservered at every opportunity and flnally showed up where Van Leeuwen thought he should have been; in first placel Aldana halfmUed it inside of the Skipper right on up into the T.T. turn and was steaming it so bard that in coming onto the jump, he had to roll the throttle off a bit to miss the outer edge of the rampl That was bls only near-loss of first place that whole night; he had the iead and absolutely coveted it. In the .next lap, the Skipper pulled to within five feet of the Beaza, and Brelsford had moved an equal dJstance behind Van Leeuwen's Triumph. B.S.A., Triuumph, and Harley were each in strtklng dJstance. The Harley and Triumph minced dJrt for a couple of laps but B.S.A. mounted Aldana, meanwhUe, was just tearing it UP. Brelsford lost second again only to regain it once more and Aldana was sttll making unreal flights through the halfmUe turns. Aldana may or may not be the unsafe rider peOPle claim, but he ts the Idnd of racer that doesn't know how to float when he'S bullt uP a safe lead. Manl He ts one more racer and spectators eat it UP. He'll race with himself and he certainly mastered bls race Thursday night. At the flnlsh he was Sttll stretching dJstance on Brelsford, who had almost half a lap on the sputtering Triumph of Van Leeuwen. Mulder was a dJstant fourth and Lloyd Houch1ns, in fifth, was glad it was over, having fought Dave Hansen back all the way. The Amateurs? well, ••• Tad Sloan will not cherish bls second place trophy. Mter an absolute runaway race over Terry Dorsch, Randy Ellls, and last week 's winner John HaOOley, Sloan slowed down to half speed on the last lap for some unexplainable reason. Haieley cashed in on the opportunity and closed the one-half lap distance between them and then added a few more inches , to take the win at the ftntsh ' Une by a wheel. Moor ftntshing dead last the previous week, Randy Ellis had fourth place sewn uP convincingly until a course marker shifted gears for him in the T .T. turn, bending bls lever in the process. Terry Dorsch put third place to bed ahead of Tom Clark and Randy Ellls finished up the night dead last, again, ' due to shifting problems. The Novices dJdn't ride like Novices, as Ray Vanderpool on a Yamaha snatched uP the lead from Gary Scott whose Bultaco was running so fast it was under protest. Scott eventually routed Vanderpool and went on for a hair-raising win, angling his bike sixty degrees over the jump. The protest was unproven, and Scott was given the princely sum of $27.00 for hts tire destroying ride. Carl Byers on another Yamaha grabbed third, -, and Ron Moore rounded out fourth with another Bultaco, And if the thought of wild T .T. racing tsn't exciting enough, the promoters have promised half- mUe action to follow on Friday nights. Wow! (Results on page 26)
