AI Plymoulh p By Dave/ >Loo Photos by Bob Kraft PLYM OUTH, CALIF . March 28 - Gary Bailey showed sixteen eager motocross riders how it's done today at this northern California course, and the general optnton of the riders was that Gary is one of the more qual1f1ed instructors around. Bailey has been conducting a ser i es of these schools In California, and soon plans to head out of state again to demonstrate proper m otoc r oss technique -in Washington, Colorado, Texas and Kansas. Gary started things off with a r iders' m eeting and an explanation of the 1mpartance of proper clothing and headgear f or motocr oss riding. Then the course became his classroom, and he brought students to a better understanding of just what i t !likes to win at motocross. Gary reminded the class that one of the main purposes of his motocross school is to correct chronIc riding erros that keep motocrossers from doing as well as they might- if they used common sense. In fact, Bailey showed that common sense i s one of the most valuable assets a r ider can have when he competes In motocross. "Why hammer yourself to death in the rough stuff, when you can f ind a moother Une ?", Gary asked his students, And then he showed that careful th1nk1ng (combined with a generous helping of talent) can cut many seconds from lap times. Gary put local motocrossers through many paces, teaching them starting and braking techniques, proper body english, and how to traverse deep mud and sand sections. Gary is' an advocate of both trials and trails as preparation for motocross, and he .voiced great respect for the great skUl of many trials masters. He also phUosoph1zed on European riders, saying that "The quality of European motocross riders is just first class - they take riding seriously and it shows." After organized Instruction, Gary led the class on a chase through the cow pastures and meadows surrounding the -Plymouth track. Later on In the afternoon he dem onstrated his now-famous balancing act on a stationary motorcycle. Gary can crawl all over a stationary bike for minutes at a time - standing on the seat, balancing on the bars and so on. His performance del1ghted the enthusiastic crowd. He is both a showman and a gentleman . Here's a schedule of coming Gary Bailey Riding Schools: AprU 3, Plymouth , Calif. (Gary and Lars Larsson); AprU 18, SeaFalr City, Seattle; .A pr U 25, Layfette, Colorado; May 2, Green Valley Raceway, Austin, Texas; May 16, Topeka, Kansas; May 29, Coffeeville, Kansas.
