Priddy Leads Open Class In Texas Championship By John Blanton ~ AUSTIN, TEXAS, March 8, 1970- After tz:I dropping out of the 250 class, In which :i!: he bad led until today, Wyman Priddy, tz:I riding a Malco, has ' moved solidly Into ...:l . the lead In the Texas Championship Open ~ Class motocross competition. Leading U with thirty points after the first three races, Priddy picked up an additional fifteen for his first place f1n1sh at the Austin meet. With Priddy out, the new 250cc Class leader is David Dismukes, with forty-two points after today's win. Bill Kasson Is In second place, with thirty-nine. With both men riding CZ's. In Sunday's Junior (non-championship) classes, 125cc winners Included Don Frey, George Majewski, Tom Eller and Bob Menefee, all on Yamaha's except Menefee, who rode a Penton. Two-flfty winners were Virgll Jones (Bultaco), Martin Grantham (Yamaha), Don Ham (Ossa) and Ed Childress (Yamaha). This was reportedly the first time out on two wheels for Grantham, for former USRRC formula car driver. John Loughlin (American Eagle) was the hands down winner In the 125cc Senior, posting three first In the absence of points leader Mike Johnson. Second, third and fourth went to Perry Lorenz (American Eagle), Charles Eller (Yamaha) and Bob Howard (American Eagle). Apparently goaded by snide comments concerning his competitiveness,' local rider Jack O'Leary was f1nally persuaded to enter his Yamaha In the championship event. But he soon bad his detractors laughing out of the other side of their mouths, as he took all three heats of the 250cc Senior Class by scandalous margins. Second up was David Dismukes, now moving Into the champfonship lead, and ' 111e brawllne Open class riders eet oIf the li ne In their third heat. Wyman (97) Priddy already has a slim lead. Priddy Is currently Ieadlnethe Teus Motocross points race. B111 Kasson was third. Fourth was John Miller (Bulatco). In the Open Class, early leader Robi Holbert (CZ) lost his place to Ed Terrel (Montesa), when he slipped off briefly toward the end of the first heat. Holbert subsequently somersaulted his bike and took over the starter's flags for the remainder of the day. Priddy beat out Terrel In the second heat, but his third place f1n1shIn the first heat left him one down as the third heat got underway. And then the drama of the third moto, Terrel f1n1shed the first lap nearly one half lap behind the leaders, and he was charging madly to make up the loss. On the eighth lap, what bad seemed inevi- table f1nally happened. The bike developed w1ld and uncontrolable osc1llatlons on a dippy stretch approaching the f1n1sh line, and Terrel was thrown brutally from the bike, landing several feet away. He remounted to f1n1sh the rema1n1ng two laps In ninth place. giving him second overall. Priddy's win clinched first overall for him. Third and fourth were Ken WUson and Floyd Hungerford on Husqvarnas.
