Winner Jerry Christopher of West Covina, Cal. and the next 19 f1n1shers were all mounted on the tuning fork brand. Christopher took the lead in the !irst pass around the banking after Conrad Urbanowskl froin Hollywood, Fla. developed shi!t1ng problems and dropped out of first place. Christopher poured it on and was never pressured throughout the rest of the race. However, the traI11ng positions were hotly contested and the men on the scoring tower were kept Ina dither trying to keep the big number board uP to date with what was happening on the track. - Ur banows kl s oon cleareduPhisshi!ter . and began to pick uP the ten or more positions he had dropped. Conrad worked his way through the field and passed everyone but Christopher, Doug Teague and Jeff March were battling for fourth and Alabama's Ronnie Dottley was holding down third. Dottley Inherited second place when Urbanowskl got of! big coming onto the banking from the Infield. Conrad smacked the haybales and his Yammie fiberglassed a 200 foot strip of the track. Dottley was trailing Christopher by too far to make a bid but March and Teague changed places several times before taking third and fourth respectively. Aside from his flrsl place money he picked contingencies from Kawasaki , Bell hel· . mets, Champion plugs and BlendzalllolaJing $6200. Bradley Picks Up Big Dough In Amateur 100 Miler DAYTONA, FLA . Fr iday March 13 F r ida y the 13th was a very luc ky day for Rusty Bradley. The 20-year-old Texan, riding a pea-green Kawasaki 500cc Three sponsored by Boston Honda, led the 100 mile , 27-lap Amateur road race all the way and collected $6,200.00 for the ride. That's pretty good money for an " Ama- teur". Five thousand of the dollars came from Kawasaki's hal!-ml1llon dollar prize fund, $100 for wearing a Bell helmet, $200 for using Champion spark plugs and $100 for running Blendzall 011. And, oh ye s •••$800 first place prize money. Working uP to a brl1llantly-rldden second place was young Pennyslvanian Gary Fisher, a dead ringer for Gary Nixon, astride one of Nixon's old Triumph twins. Fisher fought for the spot, outskldding an evil-handling motorcycle and the formldible competition of FlorIda'S Ray Hempstead, who piloted a 350cc Yamaha. SliPping Into 4th place, just ed ging a surprised Gary Emde was Rdy GalIndo, who waited to take Emde on the last Iap, Rusty was making beaut1!ul 2-wheel drifts around the turns, on his way to a new track record at 100.72 3 mph. Rain Swamps Alligator Enduro DAYTONA, FLA. Thursday, March 12The Al11gator Enduro, that annuallY challenges the trail riders, but usuallY not very much (overall winner generally keeps a perfect score) proved especially torturous after rain drenched the 50mlle course, making an Okeefenokee swamp out of the first leg. Dallas Nichols put his Michigan woods experience to a good test In the Florida palmettos. He finished with a full !1!teen points lost, but his 945 bettered by nine minutes the second overall score of National Champion John Penton, riding a new 175 model of his own manufacture. Nichols was Honda powered, by the way. Florida and Georgia riders, who generally only avoid trees bigger around than a beer-tan, led the lists in most classes. They are used to this kind of run. But Ohio'S Penton won his class, as did Jim Vogle of Groveport, Ohio and Jesse Thomas of Kentucky. After the Enduro, big Fred Green, who stands somewhat over six feet tall, indicated a place near his neck and swore that "The water was this deep." . "How deep?" asked John Penton, measuring the mark.
